Question:
Any proximal long term post-ops? Have you been successful?
I'm only 4.5 months out, but scared to death that I'll gain the weight back! Thanks alot for all of your support! — jengrz (posted on March 29, 2003)

I know exactly how you feel. I am 4 months post op and I always feel as if
Im not going to get to goal because I am proximal. I only lose 1 week out
of the month. Drives me nuts, but I try not to compare my lose to others.
We will all lose, proximal or distal. We just lose at our own rate. Just
stay positive and do what you're supposed to and it will come off. Good
Luck.

I am three years post-op, and remember very well those anxious feelings
that you describe. My younger daughter had her proximal RNY 3 months
before I did, and was a very fast "loser". I, on the other hand,
lost weight in the beginning at a much slower rate and was convinced that I
was the one person in the universe that this surgery wouldn't work for. At
the six-month-mark, we were almost equal in pounds lost...her dramatic
early weight loss had slowed down, and mine had remained slow but steady.
Now, three years later, we are ecstatically still at goal, healthier and
happier than ever before in both of our adult lives, and would tell you
that this surgery was by far the best thing that we ever did. After our
surgeries, three more folks in our family had proximal RNY surgery and are
now 6-26 months post-op and would tell you exactly the same thing.
However, it it important to remember that almost any WLS can be sabotaged
by returning to those old eating habits that got us all into trouble in the
first place! Keep in mind that everyone loses at different rates....try
not to "obsess" about weighing every day (it will only make you
crazy!)....follow your surgeon's guidelines to the letter now, and for the
rest of your life....and have faith in yourself and in the surgery. Soon,
you'll wonder why on earth you ever had a doubt :-) Best wishes!
