Same procedure, except: LAP is done laporascopically- thru the abdomen wall
(4-6 very small incisions, using a camera). Open is a large incision (4-9
inches usually), once inside most MD's do the same procedure roux-n-y.

Lap means laproscopic - using a few small incisions to do the work inside
you with special tools. Open is just that, an open incision. With lap
you'll have a few small scars, the other you'll have one long scar from
breastbone to belly button usually. Besides the scars though there are
other factors to consider. Very few doctors do distals via lap because of
their hindered ability to measure off the amount bypassing so much. Lap is
usually more costly if you're self paying. With open you have a much
higher risk for hernias. Those who opt for lap usually seem to have a much
quicker recovery. With all that lap offers though some people don't feel
safe with not having a doctor be able to see the surrounding areas inside.
Its a personal choice as to which is "better" and often has more
to do with the doctor you choose and their method of operating. Hope this
helps!
