Question:
Almost three years post-op, and problems with reflux/possible ulcer...
... has anyone been in this situation? I am able to eat A LOT more than I thought I would... actually, I've really had to watch it lately b/c I am eating like a horse (well, for ME, that is! LOL). I am taking 75mg per day of Elavil, as prescribed by my neurologist as a prophylactic against migraines. Recently, I had a weird thing happen: lots of stomach upset and gnawing pain in the upper chest (esophagus) area... the inside of my mouth was raw with some very small blisters - it felt like a bad case of pizza-burn or coffee-burn! My PCP thought I had some sort of infection going on, so she put me on Amoxicillin, 875mg twice a day for 10 days. Still, after finishing the meds, I am still having the same problem. I have asked if there might be a chance my staple line has come partially undone (I have a non-transected RNY), and/or ulceration someplace in the mix. My PCP is not all that saavy with WLS patients. She has referred me to a gastroenterologist... but I was just curious to know if anyone else has had a similar experience. It is quite a long wait til the gastro doc can see me, so... I'm just pickin' brains! LOL. Many thanks! — Lisa P. (posted on February 11, 2003)

I don't really have the reflux, but after 6 months post-op I developed a
marginal ulcer which was extremely painful. I had to go to the ER for
surgery to repair a hole in my new stomach. Your question struck me
though, b/c I was on Elavil as well for preventative against headaches,
along with 3 other head medicines, and lots of vitamins, so I was taking a
ton of pills a day. Are you just on that, or other things? We think the
medicines irritated my stomach and really hurt it, maybe could be the same
for you. Not a doctor, just thought I'd give my opinion, so who knows. I
hope you feel better!

Just a comment on Elavil...it is notorious for being a huge weight-gainer.
Long before I had surgery, my PCP put me on Elavil for my headaches, and I
gained 17 lbs. the first two weeks! Tricyclic medications, which is the
class Elavil is in, make everyone gain weight. I can't take them at all.
