Question:
Has anyone had a routine mammogram after WLS?

Hi, I have lost a lot of weight and because of this I noticed my breasts seem denser. I went in for a routine mammogram and the doctor noticed two lumps. I'm scheduled for a biops in a few weeks. I think (am really hoping) that these are just cysts. Has anyone else noticed changes in your breasts because of the weight loss? Leigh    — Leigh P. (posted on January 16, 2003)

The only change I have noticed about my breast, is how small they have gotten. I want to wish you luck.

Leigh, I had a mammogram 11 months after wls. My Dr. found a lump. It was checked by a surgeon and will be reevaluated in 4 weeks. My husband is a radiologist(the Dr. that reads mams). He said yes your breasts will be more dense since there is less (much less) fat. Good luck to you and please let us know that everyting is o.k. Good luck Nancy

Hi Leigh: Because I had WLS and wanted to be healthy in all areas, I scheduled a gyn appointment for one month after surgery. The gyn ordered a mammogram. I had not had one in 9 years. Unfortunately the mammogram showed calcifications in my breast. I do not know if this was due to WLS or not. I am scheduled for a stereotactic (something like that) biopsy of the breast next Tuesday. I would think that WLS would change the configuration of your breasts, just like it changes all other proportions of your body. Let me know how you are doing. Good luck. Love Grace

hiya. i found a lump pre op that turned out to be an enlarged blood vessel and since i have family history of breast cancer, i now have a mammo every year. my doc found a lump 4 mos post op but it turned out that my breasts are fibrocystic. i had my annual a few weeks ago and they were fine... try not to stress about it, that doesn't help (easier said than done i know) but i've been through 2 scares so i've been there. your breast tissues changes post op and remember the estrogen levels in our bodies change due to the weight loss and that can cause breast issues too. hang in there {{hugs}} kate
