Question:
Can you use both Nioxin and Rogaine?

I'm in my fourth month post-op and am losing hair like mad. And it was thin to begin with. I was doing 90 g of protein a day and just upped it to 120. I do 1200 mcg of biotin a day, zinc, and now Knox for nails just for good measure. I started using Rogaine 2 years ago when I noticed it thinning a little and am still using it. I just started using Nioxin shampoo and conditioner too. I'm confused though because Nioxin also has a "tonic" that you put on your scalp. I didn't get that - still using the Rogaine. Has anyone else combined these? Not sure if they work together okay.    — ediecat (posted on January 16, 2003)

Aside from the cost factor, if you were to use both, how would you know which one, if any, works?

Call your beautician or local beauty supply one of them could probably answer your question.

I have been on this site for over a year now and have observed the following. People who have done all the 'right' things to prevent hair loss, still lose lots of hair. People who don't do any of those things don't lose any hair. I really think that it is just dumb luck rather than anything anyone is doing. I know there are people who will swear that as soon as they started (pick one of the 'right' things) that it 'stopped hair loss in its tracks'. I just have seen so many posts which suggest otherwise, that I am not convinced. I lost a lot of hair, but when I went in to have it cut really short so it wouldn't be so noticeable, my hairdresser said she could see lots of new growth. It will grow back.

I also had thin hair before having wls. I lost nearly all of it, and felt like a plucked chicken! I really was not happy about it, but this is a temporary condition. My hair has completely come back to what it was pre-op. My advice is to realize that this is only temporary, and save yourself a little money. If you are feeling really self concious try some short term fixes, but your hair will come back once your body doesn't think its starving to death. Good Luck to you.

Oops. Meant to say that people who didn't do any of the 'right' things didn't necessarily lose their hair. Barbara Thompson, who wrote a book about her WLS, was here in Denver a few weeks back. Someone asked her about hair loss and her reply was that, in all her travels around the country, she had yet to meet a bald woman.

I am a licensed hairsylist in Pa. Rogaine is very expensive. You have to use it for several months before and change is noticeable. And you have to continue to use it if not you will lose all you gained and then some. As for Nioxin I have found that to be a very good product. Another thing you could try is Nexxus Vitatress Vitamins. They are specially formulated to promote hair and nail growth. I used them post-op and it works great. They are alittle costly. They retail from $15-20 depending on the area you live in. Good Luck!!!!!!!!!
