Question:
can you eat salads after awhile, or is that a no no food
I have tried to find anyone who had problems eating salads after there surgery. I am waiting for approval from my insurance, but was wondering, because I love salads now, but if I eat salad to often, I have real stomach problems, to much ruffage. — cindy (posted on January 1, 2003)

Most like me can eat anything including salads just fine. At about a month

Not only do I eat lots of veggies and salad...but I find I can eat a lot of
volume of veggies/lettuce. I know at first it gave me a bit of the runs,
but now it isn't a problem, you will have more trouble with salad dressings
that may have a lot of sugar in them (like honey mustard).

I'm 8.5 weeks post op, and I can eat salad just fine. I can eat more salad
than solid food cause it turns quite liquidy in the pouch. I really love
sliced cucumbers and other veggies in salads, but hard, tough ones like
cauliflower and raw carrots get grated thru my cheese grater first. The
only thing I avoid now are pieces of celery (too stringy and chewy) and
tomatoes with skin, cause I just can't seem to chew it enough. Hugs, Kim

I had Caesar Salad when I was six weeks post-op (for my son's 18th
birthday) and I've been eating them regularly since then. My surgeon
encourages salad and we don't have to use any special dressing - just
whatever we like as long as we don't over do it. One of my favorite meals
is the Chicken Mandarin Salad from Wendy's. When I first started eating
them, one would make three meals if I added more chicken. Now I can
sometimes eat almost a whole one for a meal. I try not to but I can.

I had "permission" to eat them at 5 wks, but my body didn't want
them. Once my pouch could tolerate them, they made me gassy. SHEESH, I
thought I would never get that green crunch again. Then one day, poof, I
was fine.

It took me many months before I could add salads. It is now a daily
experience for me. Occasionally, something gets caught and causes me
trouble. But that happens to many things I eat. I am a person who
requires and lot of cruch food, and this is the best. I love it with Ken's
walnut vinegarette dressing. I will often add some protein to it.

Our surgeon allows his RNY patients to have simple lettuce and tomato
salads at 3 weeks. We were allowed to add crunchy veggies and other salad
ingredients at 6 weeks. He also instructs his patients to use
"regular" salad dressings because the low-fat varieties generally
have more sugar than regular dressings. I thought that my first salad was
the best thing I had ever had in my mouth. I tolerated it just fine and it
remains a "favorite" 33 months later. Best wishes!

I'm 8 months postop and I love salads. I seem to be able to eat more salad
than any other food. I add a variety of meats to help with the protein.

Had my first salad at 5 weeks post-op and I thought it was the best thing I
had ever eaten! Today, at almost 11 months post-op, a favorite is a big
green salad with tomatos, shredded carrots, hard boiled egg, tomato,
shredded cheese, kidney beans, mushroom, onion and some grilled chicken or
steak. YUM and chock full of protein!!

I love salads, and can eat them readily. My only worry is about hidden
sugar in the dressing. Probably early on you should limit your salads to
really bland stuff like Iceberg lettuce, and be prepared to see it nearly
unchanged in the toilet, but later you should be fine. That was my
experience. Good Luck!
