Question:
i can not eat leftovers
Hello! I was wondering if I'm the only one that can not eat any leftovers no matter what it is. It does one of 2 things, it feels like a brick in my tummy or I get that "yuck" sick feeling. I'm wasting lots of food (and money) so if anyone can share if this is just a stage post-ops go through or is there anything I can do about to fix it, I would love to hear from you. Thanks a bunch. I cant eat leftovers either. Its usually the smell that gets me. Im
usually ordering very small portions anyway - just to avoid having to cart
them home. Im also finding myself ordering things that hubby likes -
because I know he will eat the leftovers if there are any.

It IS a STAGE and it WILL pass. However it will take some time. I think it
was around 4-6 months post op before I could "stomach" ANY left
overs. Just the thought of left overs was the most revolting thing.
Achhhh!
Actually right now I'm eating some left over Christmas lunch that I've
already had four left overs from. So it will pass. I know how frustrating
it is. But you'll lose weight better now, and slower when you can
"stomach" leftovers. ;)

Are you microwaving them? I know that some people cannot eat microwaved
leftovers but have no problems eating them cold. I also prefer most
leftovers cold although I do not get sick from microwaving them. Also, you
may try to order something rather bland if you are planning on eating the
leftovers. I know that our sense of smell seems to be pretty sensitive
after WLS. If you are worried about wasting money, don't. If you hadn't had
the surgery you would have probably ordered that and more. Forget about the
little starving children in China. I order what I like and if I don't eat
it all, so what. I enjoyed what I ate and so I don't consider it a waste.
Besides, better that it go to WASTE than to WAIST! :)

YES! We noticed that at support group. Very few of us can manage
leftovers--it's like they change molecularly or something. Sometimes I can
do them cold, and some things, yes--like pasta-I can reheat that. Isn't
that weird? But yeah, it's common.

If you reheat the leftovers in the microwave, it dries them out and makes
it harder for you to enjoy. If you can find a "steam heat"
method, you'll have better luck.

I hate to admit this, and it drives my DH (who does all the cooking)) crazy
- but, I never have liked leftovers. Now that I can only eat tiny meals,
I am even pickier. If I don't really like it and I don't really want it, I
don't eat it. And, even if I liked it when it was fresh, I won't want it
warmed-over.

To those of you who say that microwaving dries food, it does'nt have too. I
put the soft clear plastic wrap that clings (forgot what it's called) over
my food and plate. Then have my temp setting at medium or lower and make
sure I don't leave it in to long. It keeps the moisture in and usually
does'nt dry the food out! However I don't think a microwave is the real
problem with not wanting left overs. I think it's just the fact we are over
sensitive for the first several months. At least I think that was my
problem back then.

I am the same way! I just can't eat the same thing 2 days in a row. No clue
why. Just the thought of leftovers turns my tummy. Wendy (RNY 10/29/02

I find that a damp paper towel moistens the food while reheating in the
micro - or I just nibble on some meat cold. Roast beef is good cold (to me
anyway). But a lot of leftovers DO bother me. They just don't taste right
- even when they aren't dry. You could try not cooking as large a portion
at a time for you. I do that with burgers. Make patties for everyone else
and only cook half for me so I can do half later. Same with steak and
chicken breasts. Just a thought.

My problem with leftovers is that sometimes the leftovers(especially from a
restaurant) could make 3 or 4 more meals and I get sick of the same thing
at every meal. A great solution...husbands! Or kids...My poor husband has
gained a few pounds just by eating my leftovers. However, he often looks
forward to the styrofoam containers in the fridge too..As for you not being
able to eat leftovers, it may be because you are still a new post-op and
your tastes may change further down the road.
