Question:
I've never had knee trouble til I lost 150 pounds...

My knee and foot on one leg are killing me. I actually thought my foot was broken last week! And as for my knee I have to hobble around half the time! I've lost 150+ pounds with another 200+ to go - so why now am I having bone problems? Anyone have any idea?    — Pamela P. (posted on July 29, 2002)

Pamela, I don't have an answer for you, but I wanted you to know you're not alone! I had knee problems before I lost all this weight, but not nearly as bad as now! Not sure if it's age (I'm only 33!) or just from the weight loss, but my knees are always hurting now. Doctor said it was arthritis...that really sucks when you're so young! I try not to let it bother me too much...try taking Tylenol Arthritis Pain...it really helps me! I wish you luck!

Pamela, it does sound a lot like arthritis or tendonitis. I agree with the Tylenol Arthritis as a pain reliever. I recommend that you get a referral to a physical therapist for some water aerobics or to learn some strengthening exercises. I had to go for my plantar fasciitis and a strained ACL in my knee. They are really wonderful, but you have to stick to the program. They can get your pain to a tolerable level, and may even eliminate it. You may also consider cortisone shots. I had 6 in my feet and ankles and now I learn that they are bad to deteriorate the tendons. I have had no problems yet. No, the shots didn't hurt a bit, they froze it first, and used a super small needle. Play it by ear, and see what works for you.

When losing weight our bodies are "off" and need to adjust. We carry ourselves different. I had terrible terrible upper back pain about a year out that lasted for 6 months. I saw a chiropractor who did periodic adjustments. You could be having radiculopaty, which is pain that radiates down your leg, stemming from your back being out of alignment. I would get checked out throughly by your doc, rule out any other problem (blood work can show lots) and then try a chiropractor. Just a thought! Good Luck!

I have an off and on knee problem. Not exactley arthritis(sp) But more an inflamation of those tendens around my knees. I find certain shoes have a huge impact on how I walk and can create swelling. I have also had to relearn getting up by supporting my body instead of forcing my knees to do all that heavy lifting. Good Luck.
