Question:
Has anyone else had this happen?

I just got back the results from my first blood workup since my surgery, six months ago. My PCP was concerned because my blood sugar was so low, 44. He said it could be indicative of a pancreatic tumor. Has anyone else had a really low blood sugar since their surgery??? Thanks for your help.    — Diane W. (posted on July 11, 2002)

Hi. No ofeense, but you might consider educating your PCP on WLS. Low-blood sugar is a common condition post-op and is usually caused by eating sugars and dense fats. According to what I have read, eating 6 small meals per day, upping your protein intake, drinking lots of water between meals only, eating very slowly and resting before getting up after eating should help. Please put your mind at rest and read up on WLS online or in some of the new books that are out. Good luck!

Yep falling blood sugars are NORMAL for post ops! Dont panic and call your surgeon. He can discuss it with your PCP, after all your surgeon shold be a expert at post op blood work. Be sure all blood ork goes to both docs for best follow up.

I would agree with what everyone else posted, I was a type 2 diabetic before surgery, my blood sugar was regularly around 170-200,(normal is 76-125 anything above is diabetic, there is no such thing as borderline). Now it is around 84-120(120 is when i had a slurpee once,,,,). So a slurpee is loaded with sugar and mine only got to 120, I am 3 months post op(it made me totally sick, but i had a craving). If it was before surgery, my sugar would have gone over 200. I just wanted to explain to you, this is why your sugar is so low. It gets that way for everyone, that's why docs say the surgery can cure type2 diabetes and it did mine. Anyways you are just 6 mo. out and your body is getting used to you not eating much and limiting your sugar where as before your surgery, you probably didn't. I mean if I weren't diabetic before the surgery mine probably would be that low. I am sure everyone goes through low blood sugar after the surgery. If your question still isn't answered, definitly call your surgeon.

Your PCP expressed concern and mentioned it could be a tumor after just ONE blood test?!?!?!?

Please don't panic! If your PCP is going by a blood sugar of 44 and telling you that you might have a pancreatic tumor, I'd get a new PCP. I'm serious. Blood sugars will drop to normal and sometimes below due to the dramatic dietary changes that occur with WLS. Please consider talking to another physician, with lab results in-hand. I think it'll help. Good Luck, Diane Norcross RN, LHRM http://www.WeightlossSurgery.ws
