Question:
Do I have to go to a PCP before I go see a surgeon?
I don't even have a PCP. I know I need one... but do I have to have a refferal from a PCP.. or can I go see a surgeon first? — ag21al (posted on July 11, 2002)

It depends on what type of insurance that you have. If you have an HMO
that requires a referral from your primary care physician in order to you
to see a specialist, then the answer is yes. My suggestion is that you
call your insurance company and ask them. If you have a ID card for your
insurance company, there should be a number on there to call for Member
Services.

I did not see a PCP prior to my consult with my surgeon. My insurance did
not require it so I contacted the surgeon and made an appt. myself.

Andrea,
Your surgeon will most likely require that you have a physical or at least
medical clearance before surgery. What I did was to make the appointment
with the surgeon and then go see a PCP for a physical before my
consultation date. I was able to take the report from my physical with me
to my consultation with the surgeon and avoid any delay. It may also help
if your surgeon has something from your PCP to submit with your insurance
paperwork that diagnoses you as Morbidly Obese. Do you have an OB/GYN? He
or she may be able to do your physical for you.

Unless you have an HMO, then more than likely you don't have to have an
opinion. Check with your insurance company before going to see your
surgeon.
