Question:
Has anyone written a will before surgery?
I have 4 small children and I am going to be writing a will but do not really know how to start it off. I have also thought about doing a video will. Has anyone done a will without a lawyer present? If I do it without a lawyer is the will still valid? — Lovett (posted on April 1, 2002)

I made sure that my will was in order, always a good idea when you have
kids whether you are having surgery or not. I also made sure my hubby knew
where all important papers , ins. ect were. And i wrote goodbye letters to
my daughter and husband. I knew this surgery was a gift from God, but i
also felt relieved having all of it in order before I went under. Take
care.

I'm working on a new will - I needed to do one anyway. I'm also writing
letters to my family and friends but I'm calling them love letters, not
goodbye letters. They are going to be welcome to open them at any time. I
want them all to know what joy they have brought into my life. Everyone
needs that little pat on the back even if the one who loves them isn't
facing something like this.

Why not spend the $200 and do it right so you won't have ANY questions?
You want a professional to handle your surgery, why not have a professional
handle your affairs if the surgery doesn't have the best outcome? In the
light of all the legal issues your family would face after your death, it
is WISE to have it done with an attorney. Besides, if you do it by
yourself, what will you miss? What will you forget to say? Are you
absolutely sure you want to write a legal document yourself??? Spend the
money. You'll be glad you did! Make sure your spouse does it at the same
time. You won't believe how simple it is!!!

Yes, I did my will and a living will
regarding what I wanted them to do with me if-"things went
wrong". I also wrote letters to both of my daughters. Letting them
know how much I love them. Be safe!! not only before surgery but always!!

I found a great up-to-date book at the library which had sample wills in
it. (I think it was one of those orange "Idiot's Guide to...")
Not only did I create my own will, but I also created a power of attorney
form and living will. All three
documents are extremely important regardless of whether anyone is having
surgery or not. Check your library and see what books they have on the
subject.

Actually, I found a free-will site on the web that says it is valid
in all states except Louisiana. I was able to complete it in
about 15 minutes, and save it to my computer and print it out.
Then I'll get my witnesses and we'll all stand before a notary
and it's done...
Here's the web site address: http://www.freewills.com/index.html
Here's hoping this is just a good preparedness exercise.
