Question:
2 months post-op and confused about overeating!

I have never thrown up because I've overeaten. I am still eating about 4 tablespoons of food per meal, 3 meals a day. Yesterday about 40 minutes before dinner I ate a few small bites of meat then ate my 4 tablespoons over the course of about 30-40 minutes. I felt quite full but did not get sick, or nauseated. I am wondering if maybe I just am not overeating or if when I do overeat, my body processes the food quickly enough not to make me sick. I don't want to stretch out my pouch so any help would be great!    — [Anonymous] (posted on February 15, 2002)

Are you sure you are eating enough? Shouldn't you be eating 6 meals to get all your protein in? What guidelines did your surgeon or nutritionist give you? I didn't have the same surgery, but everyone I know with the RNY, is on 6 meals because of the tiny bit they can eat at one time. Good luck!

At 7 1/2 months I have never thrown up. You sound fine to me. Good luck and God Bless!

I am thoroughly convinced that you are probably not eating ENOUGH. How are you getting in at least 60 grams of protein a day? At two months out, I could eat about a half cup of food per meal, and was encouraged to do so, because my doctor wanted me to get enough protein. Now at five months out, I can usually eat a cup of food at a 30 minute sitting, though usually less at the first meal of the day. I'm not quite 5 months post-op, starting weight was 310, and I am down to 201 (-109), so clearly I am doing something right. :-) Especially the first three months, my surgeon also encouraged me to eat 6 meals a day, because your meals just aren't big enough to get in all the calories you need in three meals. My routine then was drink 0.5 liter of water, then wait 15 minutes, then eat 1/2 to 1 cup of food in 30 minutes, then nothing for 30 minutes, then start drinking again. That way, I got in tons of water (still drinking 3+ liters a day) and all my protein. I was also never hungry. I find if I drop below 600 calories a day, my weight loss actually SLOWS DOWN... the body protects itself when it senses starvation. Hope this helps. You are certainly NOT overeating!

You sound exactly like me!!! I am 2 months post-op ( and 2 days) also. I eat 3-4 bites of food 3 X a day. I always eat my protien first, and through out the day I try to snack on Jerky. ( but sometimes it's a couple of M&Ms) I even keep a baggie of jerky in my purse, in case I'm somewhere I don't want to buy a burger, it will hold me until I get home. I am soooooo sick of the shakes/bars!!! Anyway my dr. doesn't support the use of these supplements. My dr. wants me to eat 4-6 X a day ONLY MEAT/FISH/CHICKEN etc. So I try. He allows no carbs, except fruit/veggies. I have lost 30# but I am very short. I think I'm doing ok. Good Luck.
