Question:
Which diet pill worked best for you pre-op? Scheduled for surgery on 6/20/02 .
Hi I'm scheduled for surgery in June, but I was told by my surgeon that I must lose at least 15% of my weight by then. I currently weigh 285 pounds and was wondering what some of you used pre-op to achieve weight loss and keep it off for at least three to four months. If I don't lose this 15% percent, then I won't get to have my surgery. Please I need all the advice that I can get! — [Anonymous] (posted on February 12, 2002)

I am so thankful that my surgeon is not of this opinion. If I could diet
and keep it off, then I wouldn't need surgery. I was never able to find a
magic pill that would help me lose 35 pounds (which I think is what you
have to lose). You asked for advice about the pill, but the best advice
that I can give you is to research and maybe find another surgeon that does
not have this very strict and ridiculous requirement.

Oops!! Bad math. it's actually worse than I thought. You actually would
have to lose 42 pounds. It's not impossible, but seems like a lot to me.

Maybe you shouldn't be looking for diet pills but looking for a new doctor.
I am not trying to be mean but how can you be expected to do something now
that was impossible to do in the past? I think this is a cruel form of
blackmail.

I am with shelley!!!!! I can not imagine losing roughly 15 pounds a month,
for the next three monthes, on diet pills. Some people barely lose that
amount of weight After their surgery, so it doesnt seem right to exspect
that now.Iam waiting for approval, impatiently, of course, and I think you
could use a second opionin.

ps, Im with Rose too!!! lol, please calculate your bmi after this required
weight loss, is it still even 40? If youre under forty, this may mean no
surgery.pps, isnt four monthes along time to wait for surgery, once youve
been approved and had your consultation also? Just seems like it is.
Whatever happens, good luck

My surgeon also makes all his patients lose weight prior to surgery. It is
only for YOUR benefit, so, its not like he is trying to torture you even
more. My Dr puts you on a strict 800 calorie a day diet (please email me
if you would like to know what it consists of) plus exercise, and let me
tell you, it works. Better than any pill or any other "diet" I
have ever tried. One of the main benefits of losing weight prior to
surgery is it helps shrink your liver and loosen your skin, which enables
my surgeon to make a smaller incision. I had open RNY on Jan 28, 2002, and
my incision is about 5 inches long. Just had all the second half of my
staples out today, and have lost a total of 47 lbs. (30 pre op, 17 since
surgery). Sorry if I have gotten off track, but, just wanted you to know
it can be done. By the way, I started on Oct 10, 2001 at 288, so you are
right around my start weight.

I see where some DOCS ask for a 10% weight loss, but never 15%. Have you
checked out your surgeons name on this site? If you could find someone
else who had the same DOC you could find out how serious he was. They SAY
that sometimes so you dont go on a pre-surgical feeding frenzy such as I am
doing..."the 12 days of cookies" to go for me.

My surgeon puts all her patients on a high protein diet at your first
consultation for two reasons: she is documenting a medically supervised
diet AND by losing that amount of weight, you are making the surgery safer
for you and easier for the surgeon due to decreasing the size of your
liver. Losing a bit of weight is do-able. I have followed my pre-op diet
since October, I have cheated but I still have lost 17-20 lbs! I won't be
having surgery any time soon due to the whole denial/appeal process and I
plan on losing another 20 before my surgery date. This is a perfect tester
for your new post-op life! Drink a ton of water, focus on your protein
intake and add exercise slowly and carefully! You can do it!!!!!
