Question:
Diabetes test?
I went in for a diabetes test last week and I did not have to drink that "Stuff". I am wondering if they possibly did the test which tells you your blood sugars for the past few months. Is that possible and what is that test called. I know the other one is called the O'Sullivans test. Thanks — [Anonymous] (posted on January 22, 2002)

There is a test that would give the Dr an idea of what your sugar was like
for a weeks worth of time.. It's called Hemoglobin A1c. It doesn't give you
an exact glucose level.. but it tells them how well you have controlled
your sugar.. Anything above 8 means that your sugar was high and need to
adjust your diet.

Probably the hemoglobin test. Dont worry if your found to be diabetic. 85%
of type 2s are cured by surgery. If your found to be diabetic it will help
you get approved for WLS.

The test is probably a Hemoglobin A1c test. When your blood sugar is high,
the sugar attaches to the hemoglobin in your blood. The hemoglobin cells
live for about 3 months. Thus it indicates whether you have a lot of high
blood sugars in a 3 month period. A normal number, meaning for someone who
does not have diabetes, is usually around 4 or 5.
I would also like to clarify something about Type 2. Just because you
don't need insulin or meds to control your blood sugars does NOT mean that
you don't have diabetes. It means you are controlling it with diet and
exercise. It may be that you will be able to live that way all your life.
But it's also very possible that at some point, your blood sugars will
start to rise again and you may need to go back on to some kind of
medication, even if you maintain the weight loss. Any endocrinologist
worth his or her salt will tell you that there is NO cure for diabetes.
