Question:
Fun question: Do you have a favorite song that inspires you after WLS?

A song that makes you want to dance, exercise, motivates or just makes you joyful that you had this surgery? Or if you are preop, a song that gives you courage or inspiration? I do! It is "Brand New Me" by Jerry Butler! An oldie but a goodie! And one more is "Aint No Stopping Us Now" by Luther Vandross! Music makes me feel good and is an important part of my healing. How about yours?    — Marilyn C. (posted on October 31, 2001)

"Good Bye Earl" by the Dixie Chicks. Something about the beat, the humor and the revenge makes me move, laugh and enjoy myself all at the same time!

I'm a pre-op, but a few weeks ago while driving me home from and endoscopy, my best friend told me she wanted to play a song for me. She turned on the CD and told me that this was going to be my theme song from now on - it was "I'm Coming Out", but Diana Ross. Just thinking about it makes me a little emotional...I'm so lucky to have such good friends, that I don't even have to think of my own song!

Drive by Incubus. It's about overcoming fear, taking control, and looking toward the future. One of my all-time favorites!

"Oh, She's a Brick.....Howwwwse! I love that song and even though I know I'll never be "36-24-36" that's okay...I love where I am. (Okay, I know it's a flash from the past - kind of a 70's 80's thing if you know what I mean!)

It would be such a great Idea to find a way to put some of these songs on a CD and listen to it when we exercise! I have a few personal favorites: Isn't she lovely by Stevie Wonder, that song "Get up Get up put the body in motion..."(don't know who does it), I'm every Woman, by Chaka or Whitney, I will survive, by Gloria Gaynor, Just to name a few! :^])

I have small kids, so Disney is always in the VCR. My song selection would have to be "I Can Go the Distance" from Hercules. Powerful lyrics and melody. An all-around inspiring song! It goes: "I am on my way, I can go the distance. I'll be there someday, if I can be strong. I know every mile will be worth my while..."

At any crossroads or milestone event in my life I've always liked "One Moment In Time" by Whitney Houston. I especially like the lyric says '...when all of my dreams are a heartbeat away and THE ANSWERS ARE ALL UP TO ME.'

MY favorite song is "The Greatest Love" by Whitney Housto..quote: "the greatest love of all, is happening to me..learning to love yourself, it is the greatest love of all." Very appropriate for us, that we loved ourselves enough to do this for us...to change our lives and health.

"I Hope You Dance" My daughter, age 24 dedicated it to me during my long tearful fight with insurance company. It makes me cry every time I hear it, now it's for JOY, cause I'm DANCIN!!!

I already answered this...but I have another. It's not a peppy, energizing song...yet it makes me feel good and comforted. The song is "Just Wait", by Blues Traveler. A different friend..a very special friend dedicated this song to me. She is truly the only one who seems to knows what drove me to WLS and the road I've been on. The road WE ALL HAVE BEEN ON. I'm giving you the lyrics. Read them carefully and know how many people are there for you...if not at home than right here on this site. And, oh yes...it WILL come. Thank you!http://www.bluestraveler.net/lyrics/four/11.html

Pre-op and post-op I felt close to "Release Me" by Wilson Phillips. That is the group that Carnie Wilson was in. I know it is about releasing an old love, but I envisioned telling my fat to release me. It's working!!

Before: When you walk through a storm hold your head up high And don't be afraid of the dark At the end of the stom is a GOLDEN SKY AND A SWEET SILVER SONG OF A LARK...Walk on through the wind , walk on through the rain though your dreams be tossed and blown, walk on walk on with hope in your heart and YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE...

My inspirational song before surgery was 'I hope you Dance' by Leann Womack. It still means a lot to me. The lyrics can mean so many things, but to me it meant you can either sit it out (meaning life) or you can do something about it and dance!

A myriad of songs inspire me and describe my feelings right now as a pre-op, including: "Waste" by Phish, "Sail Away" by Styx, "Walk this Way" by Aerosmith, mainly because I've always wanted that sexy walk, that people just can't help turning their heads as ou walk by and now I have a chance!!!! :) And of course "Truckin" by the Grateful Dead... just truckin on to a new life! :)

On July 23rd this year I gave my life to God. As a new Christian I have a new outlook on life and all that God has done for me. I wasn't a Christian when I had my gastric bypass on March 30, 2001. I have lost 102 pounds, praise goes to God. The song that stands out in my mind is "God's been good to me" ,by Christian singer Crystal Lewis. If you listen to the words, you'll know why I chose this song.

I am really enjoying this question! It seems we all have different songs that "move" us. Most of us have more than one. If you haven't responded yet, what is your favorite song that inspires you after or before WLS? I want to add "Hope" by Shaggy as one of my favorites too.

Oh dear, don't get me started! Chop Suey by System of a Down, anything by Tool or Rage Against the Machine... they all make me feel wild & free & young again- hanging out in the mosh pits! But since I am a Libra (or just clearly schizophrenic in music choices) I cannot get enough of Marvin Gaye (Ain't No Mountain High Enough w/ Tammy Terrell), Mary J. Blige (Mary's Back!), Gorillaz (Clint Eastwood), Montell Jordan's (Tonight) or Stereo MC's (Connected)! Basically anything that "has a good beat, and I can dance to it" Now that I can dance! ha-ha!

I like Bon Jovi's "It's My Life". It fit because so many people around me during the time of my surgery had their own "opinions" about it. The words to that song fit perfectly and inspired me on the treadmill too!

I just posted. As I was reading down your responses, I noticed that someone mentioned "I'm Coming Out" by Diana Ross. I'm putting my vote in for that one too.

Being the mother of an 11 year old and a 9 year old I listen to a lot of pop music. The Backstreet Boys are favorites of mine and they sing a song called "Roll With It" Fits perfectly for me. "If you ever feel like nobody cares, when you try your best but you get no where, don't give up cause the time will come again. When they critisize every move you make and you've had as much as you're gonna take, don't you worry, soon enough things will change...."

I am not quite 3 months post op (Aug 13, 2001). the song that makes me dance and smile is: "I Feel Good" because thats exactly how I feel! It is the best thing I've ever done for myself!!

My song is the theme from the WB's "Felicity." I think it's called "A New Version of You." ... Can you become a new version of you? New wallpaper, new shoe leather, a new way home, I don't remember... New version of you, I need a new version of me....

Wow, This is such a good question. I have so many but I could not narrow it down to just one. First one "The storm is over now" By Kirk Franklin. Second "It's not right, but it's ok" By Whitney Houston and Last but not least "Clint Eastwood" By Gorrilaz.. * I ain't happy, I'm feeling glad I got sunshine in a bag, I'm useless but not for long my future is coming on"

"It's a Miracle" by Barry Manilow "How do you like me now?", "Brand New Man" (if I was a man, which I'm not) by Brooks and Dunne "Walk this Way"

"Only For The Weak" & "Can't Live a Day" by a Christian group called Avalon. All of their music inspires me, but these are my favorites. There's also a song on the Touched by an Angel soundtrack that Winona Judd does that I always have to blast on the stereo and sing along with that just moves me and makes me feel all choked up inside (but for the life of me, I can't think of the name of it right now and my friend borrowed the CD). I'm a big music person, so I could give you lots of great inspiring choices, but my list would be a mile long:)

A little off topic but I just saw Behind The Music- Blues Traveler on VH1 and John Popper lead singer of Blues Traveler has lost over 200 with WLS and open RNY in one year.He now looks like a young skinny John Belushi instead of his 428 lb. former self. His candor and honesty in talking about how his life was and now is because of this change was incredibly inspirational to anyone fighting their weight or going thought WLS or considering it. If you get a chance to see it you will be inspired. This best part was he was talking from his heart about himself not trying to sell or shill this surgery or any system like I've seen other celeb's trying to do. He had the courage to start just telling his story as the fat kid who almost ate himself to death. Heck I gonna buy his record and I'm not even into that stuff just as a thank you to him.

I saw the John Popper story too and although I always liked his music, his voice, his harmonica, I am now one of his best fans! He was so honest and cute! The main moral of his story was "I was always waiting for someone to come along and kiss me, the frog, and make life grand. Now I know that I have to make life grand myself. In other words, I have become a "self-kissing frog"! He is an inspiration. I am downloading some of these songs that everyone is mentioning to make my own CD. Has anybody ever heard "I'll Be....the Greatest Fan of your LIfe" by Edwin McCain? GREAT SONG!!!!!

A couple of years ago my husband and I were at a scenic overlook near our home and Edwin McCain's song "Could Not Ask For More" came on the radio and I told him it would be fun to dance to this song at the overlook. He seemed a bit embarrassed by this and said "no". I must have been on a diet at the time because I asked him "If I lost 100 pounds would you dance at the overlook with me?" He said "Sure". I know he never figured I'd lose 100 pounds but YIPPPEEEE, I did and now we're soon going to go to the overlook and dance. Not only is he willing to dance but he's as excited about it as me. It's going to be a cherished experience. I wrote to Edwin McCain and told him how his song had inspired me in my blue moments and how it had helped me to reach my goal. He sent me a sweet letter and an autographed photo. The last line in the song is "I have all I've waited for and I could not ask for more". How true - I had the wonderful husband and children of my dreams and WLS gave me everything else. Good Luck All!!

Rona, what a cute story! Please let us know when the dance finally happens. Although we enjoy music a lot, my husband and I have not danced (except at home) together in years. I can't wait until I can comfortably be held in his arms and dance to a real romantic song. I always felt his arms had a hard time reaching around me! The last time we danced it was at a wedding and it was to Barry White "Can't Get Enough of Your Love". It was nice but I have always fantasized about dancing slow and sexy with him. Soon...soon!

This is a great question, obviously. I've really enjoyed reading all the responses and this has always been my favorite inspirational song pre and post: "The River" by Garth Brooks. "...so don't you sit along the shoreline and say you're satisfied, choose to chance the rapids and dare to dance the tide......I'll never reach my destination if I never try so I will sail my vessel till the river runs dry...I know there'll be rough waters and I know I'll take some falls, but with the Good Lord as my Captain, I can make it through them all....." It really says what I had to say to myself to have this surgery......don't wait for life to come to you, get up and go get it...don't let fear keep you from reaching for your goals. Great songs, AMOS Family! :)

I posted this question on another board and no one 'got it' .. LOL .. glad to see it here. All my favorites have already been listed .. I'm not a Celine fan, but "A New Day" is good .. so is Staind's "It's Been Awhile" .. but my own personal WLS theme song is and always will be "Drive" by Incubus. It is the total package. Listen to it and you will see what I mean. (huh, Denise?) :)
