Question:
How can some ins. companies put in exclusions for WLS?
I thought I read that many states require ins. companies cover WLS (under certain guidelines) for the morbidly obese. How is it that I still see people mentoning they are receiving denials because their plan has an excludsion? Raulene Cringle — Raulene C. (posted on October 7, 2001)

It is not the insurance company adding the exclusion, it is the employer.
When the employer is shopping around for insurance they generally go for
the lowest rate. The lowest rate would be one that does not inclued things
like Lasik eye surgery, mental health, and of course WLS. The more
exclusions on the plan. The less the plan costs. It is not something the
employer really knows they are doing, they dont usually look that closely
to the contract. Would you prior to learning about this surgery? I know I
didnt, and its my job.

just because there is an exclusion does not mean it's enforcable. Many
states have laws that override the exclusion and many exclusions are plain
discriminatory. Know your rights and the laws. I had an exclsusion but did
not allow them to use it against me and my surgery was covered.
