Question:
A question about prenatal vitamins
Hello fellow Amos members! I am a little over 13 months post-op and recently found out that I am pregnant. Which is a WONDERFUL blessing! I have a 12 year old and before I lost the weight, I was never able to get pregnant. Anyway, I went to see my PCP the other day to obtain a referral for an obstetrician and he put me on prenatal vitamins. With my multi-vitamin, I was taking them 2x a day but when I asked the PCP about the pre-nats, he said he wasn't sure about the frequency. I don't see the OB for almost two more weeks and was just wondering if anyone had any idea what I should do. I certainly don't want to give myself OR the baby a vitamin deficiency! Any help or suggestions would be very much appreciated! Thanks in advance, Candace — Candace S. (posted on September 14, 2001)

Candace,
Like you I am pregnant after surgery. This is actually my second
pregnancy. Please look at my profile and you may want to think about
joining our pregnancy after surgery support group for any other questions
you may have. As for your question, my surgeon told me to continue to take
2 prenatals just as I would with the vitamins. I know that it is suggested
with all BTC patients that get pregnant after surgery. You really need to
watch your iron level and not getting enough iron (which can be obtained
through the vitamins) can be harmful to you. The baby will make sure to
get all the iron he or she needs and you will lack. Also have your OB draw
your blood frequently, maybe every 2-3 months to make sure your levels are
good. Congratulations and good luck!
