Question:
I have to go for pre-op tests, what is this?
I am scheduled to go for Pre-Op testing next week. They said that it would take 4-5 hours. What exactly are they testing? — [Anonymous] (posted on August 22, 2001)

You should call your Dr and ask exactly what tests he has ordered, and if
you should fast for a blood test. In my case the tests were: blood tests (I
don't know what all for but they took a bunch of those little tubes) ekg,
Pulmonary functions (I had to breath in a lot of machines, fast, slow, deep
breath, pant, etc) blood gasses (not as painful as I've heard, a quick ouch
and done), Chest x-ray. In addition I met with the anesthesiologist.
Different drs have different tests. Sometimes there is a gallbladder
sonogram, I don't have a gallbladder. Some have you drink something and
then take x-rays of your tummy. Since it's so variable the best thing to do
if you want to know what you are in for is to call and ask what your dr
requires. It's a long day but nothing was invasive, painful, or
embarrassing.
Best of luck,
