Question:
Why do I cough up foam at night?
Every night since I have been home (4 nights) I have not been able to sleep because of the coughing attacks. Tonight, I coughed up foam, twice. This concerns me, and is exasperating. Sleep is so evasive for me. Any help out there? Kay — Kay J. (posted on August 17, 2001)

If you use the search portion of the website and type foam you'll find
there are plenty of people who have experienced this. Go to
http://www.obesityhelp.com/morbidobesity/dbsearch.phtml for more
information. Good luck.

I am 17 days post-op and I had the unfortunate "foam" experience
for the first 4 days after surgery. My Dr. explained that I was swollen
more than usual around the new stomach area and that it was saliva that was
creating the foam. I was in agony over those few days, not being able to
drink anything at all, and the pain in my chest was unbearable at times
until the foam came out. I too would cough in my sleep, actually more like
choke, then after one bad attack it all stopped. I haven't had the foam
feeling at all since then. Don't worry, it may take a little longer for
your swelling to go down, just take it easy with the liquids for awhile and
don't push the softer foods until the sewlling goes away. I am still on
clear liqiuds and getting anxious to start my next phase but will wait a
few more days to be sure.
