Question:
How long does the numbness and discomfort from the leg straps used in surgery remain?
I had surgery 12 days ago and have numbness and discomfort on my outer thighs. I think this is where the leg straps were. How long will this last? — kristis (posted on July 17, 2001)

Hi Kristi,
I had LAP surgery in AUg. 2000 for acid reflux and experienced this. I also
had the strap marks inbedded into my thigh. My surgeon at the time said it
could last several months and it did. If I recall I was still slightly
tingling in November and by Dec. it was all gone. Almost 4 months for me.

I also have this numbness in my outer thigh of my right leg. It has been
there since I came out of surgery and I will be 5 weeks postop on July 23,
2001. I talked to my surgeon, anesthesiologist, and my PCP. At first they
thought maybe it was my back because I had a lot of back pain from the
surgery since I have back problems anyway. Once that eased up and the
numbness was still there, they determined it was probably the straps. My
PCP told me just this week that it takes several months just for 5 mm of
the nerve to reconstruct. My anesthesiologist told me it could take up to
a year to get the feeling back. I'll be glad to get it back though because
it's a very uncomfortable feeling!
