Question:
What is the deal with Chinese Food?

I've searched the database for any reference on Chinese food and I can't find any. My question is can we or can we not eat Chinese food? I've heard 3 post-ops say that we can not eat Chinese food because of the MSG, however they can't explain why. It seems the MSG does not agree with us? Is there any truth to this?    — Vanessa J. Hi Vanessa, I don't know what the deal is altho I understood it to be the fat/oils. I may be wrong here. I know most of the Chinese Restaurants by me do not use MSG anymore since many people are allergic. Best wishes

Hi Vanessa! I am 11 weeks postop and have yet to try any Chinese food. It has nothing to do with the MSG, I just don't think that I can handle the fats too well. Now, I did a little research and I found a lot of posts referencing Chinese food. Click on Libray at the top of any page and then do a search for Chinese. I found a lot of helpful and interesting information. Hope this is helpful.

I'm trying everything and I am 9 weeks postop(48lbs down). I do well with chinese food..like everything else I'm trying, just taking it real slow...It seems we all handle different things.

Almost 9 months post-op, down 133.5 pounds - just had chinese today for lunch. Leftovers are sitting here on my desk for either dinner tonight or lunch again tomorrow. Watch the fats (like egg rolls, sesame chicken, sweet & sour anything - its fried and the sauce is VERY sweet) I had shrimp with lobster sauce (came with 5 large shrimp, I ate 2.5 and some of the sauce), a cup of wonton soup (2 wontons with about 1/2 cup of broth) 1/2 of a spring roll (too greasy for me)and two or three bites of fried rice (again too much fat to eat it all - should have asked for white rice). The first few times I had chinese, I made sure that it was mostly veggies and either shrimp or scallops and no heavy sauces. Some things I used to love I can't eat anymore - they just don't taste the same. Try some take-up, you will be home just in case you dump. Have fun! Luv,.....

I have no problems with Chinese Food, I'm almost a year postop RNY. It probably is like anything else, sometimes it will upset you, sometimes it won't and no two people are the same. Go slow and check your limitations

I am 2.5 months. I usually go to restaurants who do not use the MSG, or I request NO MSG. Rice with the brown gravy it comes with works great and so does the soups. Try sushi restaurants too...The cooked rolls all go down really well ( watch out for the sea weed though...It doesn't seem to ever break-down when you chew it!). Japenese Restaurants usually do not use MSG.

I ate Egg Foo Yung at 2 weeks post op. But I have problems now with rice unless it is cooked very, very well. And f4ried rice makes me barf, so I avoid it. But I find lo mein dishes ok and the soups are fabulous. I love Hot and Sour soup and since it has tofu (soy protein) in it, I get my protein too! And for most things, there will be a little MSG in it, especially if they prepare it ahead of time. Only if you get something that they make just before you eat it can they accommodate a 'no MSG' request.
