Question:
Is there any good sugar free ice cream out there!

I'm dying guys! My only love in life is a 3 oz. dixie cup of ice cream once in awhile. Please suggest a 'dump-free' ice cream I can enjoy on occassion. I really appreciate your comments!    — corpdiva2006 (posted on March 3, 2001)

Don't know where you live but Blue Bell and Blue Bunny and Dreyer's all make s/f ice cream. Even though it's s/f you still gotta be careful though because the milk can cause you to dump too (I pretty much stay away from it because of this but every now and then will eat a s/f eskimo pie). Also, even though it is s/f it still has calories so watch the portions. Good luck!

I just love Health Smart fat-free, no sugar added fudge bars and orange cream bars. They are 60-70 calories apiece, so they have many fewer calories than some sugar-free ice cream in cartons. They are made by Blue Bunny, and I get mine at Walmart.

Well, I'm not 100 pct sure they are 'dump-free' since I had a BPD/DS and dumping isn't an issue, but these ARE fat-free and low/no sugar: Klondike Bars No Sugar Added (and 4 gms protein in those babies! LOL); Yoplait Mousse Yogurt Bars (they are creamy and delicious). All the best,

The lifesaver for me (especially for PMS chocolate needs:) is Schwans fat free, sugar free fudgesicles.

For the holidays, I bought my husband an ice cream machine. (I had WLS last June, he will probably have his this June). This has been the greatest gift! We bought a fully electric machine - no ice or salt required. It makes about a quart at a time, which is more than enough for our family of four - once he has had his surgery, we'll probably make half batches. The best part is that we can make it exactly the way we want it: fat free, sugar free, ice cream, sorbet, whatever add-ins suit our mood. I am going to try adding some protein powder next to make it even more healthful. My favorites to date? The fresh mango sorbet and a lovely coffee flavor ice cream he made last week. This was well worth the $60 for the machine! - Kate -

I've got to chime in with the Blue Bunny fans. Incredibly wonderful ice cream!! Not completely sugar free, as I recall, so we still need to be careful, but very good!! There are several different varieties. Our personal favorite is the "Sweet Freedom no sugar added Ice Cream Lites." Vanilla flavored lite ice cream with dark chocolate flavored coating (right off the box). One bar: 90 calories, 2g sugar, 4g sugar alcohol, 2g protein. The vanilla ice cream is wonderful, too--too good for me to allow it to be in my house for very long... it's a rare treat.

I bought a no sugar added Bryer's vanilla 1/2 gallon, a few days ago, and it was wonderful. not like other diet ice cream, but there is sugar in the cream, i think 6 grams which is not a whole lot every now and then, And there is nutra sweet ice cream by Igloo which looks very good, I will try that another time, sometimes I just like something cold.

Velvet brand ice cream is phenomenal. I've only found it at Meijers though. I used to be on the obesityhelp website all the time, but stopped about a year after my surgery. I was reading through posts today to find out about where to post a recipe book that I have available and saw these posts about ice cream. I've put together a recipe book and was browsing around obesity help.com to see if I could find out where would be the appropriate place to post the information. (I didn't want to offend anyone with unwanted postings or anything). Do you have any idea where I'd post something about the recipe books? It is an absolute life-saver when you are wanting something sweet to eat. I have experimented relentlessly and put together a book of 115 (mostly dessert) recipes. Most of them use natural fructose and turbinado sugar (turbinado sugar is simply amazing!) They are both natural sugars (fructose is a fruit sugar and turbinado sugar is actually a sugar that is 1 step away from being table sugar, but is tolerated well by most patient's who've had RNY.) Recipes are things like carrot cake with cream cheese frosting, fudgy brownies, turtle pie, chocolate fudge, peanut butter fudge, apple cinnamon strudel, caramel apple pie, cherry crisp, pecan tarts, hot fudge pudding cake, lemon meringue squares, pecan sticky bred, reese's candy, and much more that are PHENOMENAL. The books are $10 and can be ordered from me at [email protected] Thanks for any ideas that you might have.

My husband is a diabetic and loves Edys sugar free any brand. I haven't had surgery yet so I do not know if you will dump with it. Turkey Hill brand in the PA/MD area is also great. Good luck

I cast my vote along with the others for Blue Bunny frozen yogurt bars in chocolate or fruit flavor. They don't make me dump and also--very important here--don't give me gas like the other NSA ice creams do. There are lots of them that taste fine and don't make me dump but boy does my husband pay for it that night! LOL
