Question:
Can I eat these food items?
As I wait for my surgery date 3 weeks from now, it dawned on me... Can I still have my morning cup of coffee with French Vanilla (International Coffee Brand)? What about bananas, peaches, grapes and strawberries? Diet Pepsi or Pepsi One? Has anyone's surgeon suggested taking vitamin E daily? (My husband was told by a cardiologist to take Vitamin E daily after his heart attack, the purpose was for the healing properties.) — corpdiva2006 (posted on February 3, 2001)

It depends, first of all, on the type of surgery. If you are having RNY,
you may "dump" on the International Coffee -- however, this may
pass as time passes (it did with me, and now I can use these coffees, as
well as regular coffee creamer and sugar). Yes, the fruits are fine -- but
not at the first -- raw fruits and veggies are generally the last items
you'll add to your diet after surgery. Some surgeons suggest no carbonated
beverages, some allow them -- as a general rule you may drink them -- the
jury is still out on whether or not they will cause you any harm. Vitamin
B12 helps with healing, among other things and I'm to take 500 mcg. daily
for life. Best wishes.

I am 6 months post-op RNY and have my morning cup of coffee with
International Coffee Creamers. I tried non-fat dry milk and Equal, but I
couldn't handle it. Just a word of caution...these creamers were my
'gateway drug' - the first sugar I tried after surgery, and I soon learned
that I do not dump.

ANY sugars you get are going to slow your wt loss, so you have to weigh
that. Can you find a sugar free version? You might find it in dry form.
After surgery, you malabsorb your fats 'n oils to a large degree, so if you
take A, D, E, it till need to be in DRY form, not oil. Vit C helps quite a
bit with bruising and healing and it's cheap and comes chewable or
swallowable. Just don't take in an oil form.
