Question:
How can I wear a bra and keep it from irritating incision? I am 9 days post.
I am going crazy not being able to wear a bra. I really need to wear one. Any ideas? Thanks! — dtjohnson7 (posted on November 30, 2000)

I kept the bra off until I had the staples taken out, which was done at 2
weeks. I happen to wear an underwire one that is cut slightly higher in
the center, so it doesn't even touch the incision. At first it was a
little uncomfortable just because of the pain surrounding the incision, but
not a problem for long.

Hi, have you tried sports bras?

Take some yarn or ribbon and tie it in the center of the front of your bra
right in between the two cups...it may help lift it up enough to avoid your
incision. --Libby

I used a wash cloth placed inbetween my bra and skin, and if that doesnt
work try gauze. Hope this helps you!

I am with Stephanie on this one. I wore a sports bra until I got my
staples out after a month. We are all built differently, but in my case, a
regular bra would have been too painful. You might want to buy a sports
bra just in case you have any difficulty wearing a regular bra. Good Luck!

My Doctor suggest Sanitary Pads... the adhesive sticks
right to your bra... no sliding around... worked great for
me...

I ended up just cutting a little upside down "U" in the front of
my bras. I figured I would need to buy smaller down the road anyway, and
it did help to allevite the rubbing. When I did purchase new ones, I
bought bras that closed in the front. That way I could control how close
to my incision the bra band got. 3 months post-op, and it's just an
irritating memory. Hang in there

Gauze pads taped to the incisions helped me immensely from having my bra
rub against my incisions. I was unable to wear a bra without the gauze
before 2 weeks post-op. Now I am almost 4 weeks and I can wear them with no
problem,no gauze. I found sports bras to be too tight at the ribs. Felt
like a damned boa constrictor. LOL.Everyone's body is different. Good luck
in your search.

I found a bra that fastened down the front with several hooks and eyes
rather than just one clip...I just left the bottom few hooks open. (I
think I found it at Walmart)

while I was in the hospital I didn't want to appear as not wearing a bra,
nor be uncomfortable wearing one, I wore my binder up a little higher and
did not wear a bra while in the hospital.

I bought large 3m water resistant band aids and placed them at the top of
my incision for the first couple of weeks. This worked very well for me,
hope it works for someone else!
