Question:
I'm in the early process of getting approved for wls. As I read your post-op

questions, I notice that many people say they are really hungery after surgery. This is scary for me, I hate to go thru surgery and still be starving. Help- is it a matter of enought protein and water?? Thanks for your help; Robyn    — robyn S. (posted on May 29, 2000)

I don't think its because we are really hungry after surgery I think its because we are so used to eating that we forget to tell our minds that we aren't. In my case I felt like I was hungry, but I wasn't. It was just mind over matter. I am 4 months post-op and I never felt a hunger pain since surgery. Good Luck

I'm 10 weeks post-op lap RNY, have lost 50 lbs and can honestly say I have not had a day when I have been hungry. Most days I have to remind myself that it's time to eat...certainly a unique experience for me! I occasionally see a commercial or restaurant ad that reminds me of "my other life" and I remember how much I liked certain items, but it doesn't trigger hunger or the desire to have those foods. You just have to experience this to believe it, but please trust the process...it really does work!

I think that the first month is the hardest. I had such a hard time, cuz, I really felt like I was starving to death. But, once I was able to get out and do things I am never hungry. And sometimes I even forget to eat. I think the first month was more for adjusting and after that it is great. You will do just fine and I wish you luck in your approval.

I can say that there a few times a week that I feel hungry, genuine hunger. Most times, what I feel is the psychological hunger that we morbidly obese get used to. I have to sit there and literally think, am I really hungry or WANTING to eat out of some kind of emotional thing going on at the time? And 9 time out of 10, it's really emotional hunger that I feel. It really is a learning experience to try and tune into your body to see why you want to eat at a particular time. A lot of people find the way of overcoming this problem is to see a psychologist and go through couseling. I am considering seeing an eating disorder therapist because I am so afraid that I will revert to the overeating patterns that got me 251 pounds to begin with. Good Luck to you...

I haven't been hungry since the surgery. On the day of surgery the surgeon came in to see me and asked how i was doing. I told him I was starving. Well needless to say after surgery he asked if I was still hungry. I told him I think he took care of that problem. lol Hunger hasn't been a problem since. I have to remind myself to eat. Sometime when i get a little weak, it reminds me that I haven't had anything in a while then i eat.
