Question:
Can I get my insurance to change their mind?

I have BC/BS Blue Access PPO. I was all set to go to a seminar fo WLS and decided to call to see what the guidelines were for the surgery and they said my insurance policy has an exclusion that doens't cover anything for weightloss. Can there be anything done to change this. I would really like to have the surgery, but can't afford a self pay.    — Stacey S. (posted on March 7, 2005)

If I were you, I would talk to an attorney and take him/her a copy of your insurance to look over. I live in the state of Virginia, which has legislation to stop this kind of thing, however, that doesn't stop the insurance companies from trying to say they have exclusions, anyway. Talk to an expert about your policy. You might be surprised what they can tell you!

I had an exclusion clause and contacted Walter Lindstrom (actually I had his wife Kelley), at Obesitylaw.com and I had my surgery 12/17/04, they were wonderful. If you have any questions, just email me. (Jennifer, Lap RNY, 12/17/04) PA

Are you sure that there is an exclusion for WLS or is there an exclusion for the payment of weight loss programs, like Weight Watchers or Jenny Craig? There is a difference. Now, I agree with the other posters about contacting an attorney. Good luck.

I would imagine you would have to get a denial before a lawyer would take any action. Go to the seminar, visit with a surgeon and submit for approval. My insurance told my surgeon's office that it wasn't covered when in fact it was. Good luck. Rebecca
