Question:
Having an Endoscopy done Mon. and really nervous about this.
He guys I am having an endoscopy done Mon. the 12th in preperations for my revision surgery. (From VBG to RNY) The surgeon wants this done BEFORE they will submit for approval. They are hoping to prove staple line disruption. Anway, I have never had this done and am REALLY nervous and dont know what to expect. Anyone who has had one, I would love to hear from you. ALso, is the dr. generally able to tell you right afterwards of his findings?? Thank you all so much for your comments. — MS. A. (posted on April 8, 2004)

I actually had three separate endoscopy procedures done within a month and
a half of surgery because they were trying to find a blockage. It's really
not all that bad in my experience. I was an inpatient so they brought me
down from my room to the procedure area. I got hooked up to a monitor for
blood presure and pulse and and they changed my IV. If you're coming off
the street, they will start your IV. They also explain to you a bit about
how things happen. This is all done in a sort of waiting area then when
you're ready you go into the actual procedure room. They then give you
something to relax through your IV, I can't remember the name of it. They
don't put you to sleep completely, although, you're pretty much relaxed
enough that you don't remember much about the actual procedure. They put
the tube down your throat and watch on a monitor to see what's going on. I
was told immediately what they found. I actually heard the doctor say,
there it is...then when I was back in the waiting/recovery area he came in
and told me the results. I had further ones to dilate scar tissue twice
and then finally to check to make sure the blockage was gone. Hope this
helps...just try to relax...it's not nearly as bad as I had expected it to
be.

Hi Tina;
I've had two endoscopies done before because of my hiatal hernia and GERD.
There's nothing to it. They give you some medicine and you're out and you
don't remember anything. They can normally tell you right away what they
see.

I had an endoscopy done after surgery because I had bad nausea and they
were trying to find out why. They wanted to widen my stoma. Anyway I was
totaly scared! But it was so easy. I was on an IV, and they took me into an
operating room. The dr. explained everthing as he went. He had me lay on my
side. He sprayed some stuff on the back of my throat, he said would numb
it, it felt and tasted like that stuff you use when you have a sore throat.
He had me swallow a few times. He showed me the endoscopid camera thing. I
don't it's technical term, but I mean the little camera on the stick. Then
the nurse gave me the happy relaxing medicine, and I don't remember
anything after that. I woke up and they were done. It seemed like it only
took a few minutes. You will do great! It was the easiest thing I had to do
during this whole weight loss surgery journey. I would rather do that
again, then have to swallow that stuff for the leak test!

Hi there and DO NOT FRET! The worst of it is having the IV line put in.
After you are taken into the endoscopy suite, you will be given medication
that will keep you from being aware of the procedure or remembering it at
all! Definitely a miracle of modern medicine. As a nurse, and an
endoscopy patient myself, I can tell you that it'll probably be the easiest
procedure you've been thru in years! Good luck. Let us know how it went!

You will be fine. Easier then the surgery. I had 4 endoscopys actually 5.
I pre op as required. and later 3 stritcutes and 2 ulcers (1 time had both)
so 5 in total. I don't regret the surgery and the endoscopy was easy,
best rest i've gotten in years. I wish they could knock me out at home,
or the kids (wink) You'll be fine.

Hi Tina, I had an endoscopy a couple of months ago, so that my new surgeon
(doing an open rny on 4/28/04) can see what the previous surgeon did. I was
suppose to have had a VBG in 4/99 but that surgeon did know do that. We
have now found out all he did was put one staple line in. I have had
trouble with the vbg ever since. so now i will have a rny, and i totally
trust my new surgeon. the endoscopy was easy. they give you something to
numb the back of your throat, and you are also given something to make you
sleepy. and then they put scope down your throat. I woke up no problems,
not even a soar throat. and YES dr is able to see results immediately. good
luck Deb S. www.dooble.net my web page

Hi Tina,
I had 2 endoscopies done two weeks apart. There's nothing to be afraid of.
They give you so many drugs you'll just sleep through it and if you wake
you won't even know you did. All I remember was laying there having a
conversation with the doctor and the next thing I knew my husband was
waking me up. Nothing to it.

I've had two....it's nothing. Really. Don't stress over it one bit.

They will try to tell you their findings when they are
done. But if you are anything like I was...you won't care, nor will you
remember. LOL

I have had four of them (2 post op WLS) and they are nothing to get too
worked up over. The toughest part was finding a vein on me ;) They numbing
agent they sprayed in my throat was not exactly the tastiest thing in the
world, but after the Versed, it was all a blur :) Frankly, I can always use
an extra nap! For what they were looking for on mine (closed stoma, and
celiac sprue indications for the post-op WLS endo.) they couldn't tell me
imnmediately, but it was within a day or two.
