Question:
Question for PCOS postops regarding carbs.
Did you have to go down to No carbs to reach your goal weight? Did you 'count' your carbs??? If so, what range did you stay within?? — Kimberly J. (posted on September 28, 2003)

I'm not to goal weight yet but can offer how things have gone so far.
First I'm not sure that I had to do things the way I did because of the
PCOS. So far I cannot say it had worked against me.

My post-op eating plan started me on food at 7 days PO. Because
of that it was impossible to get in enough protein so the plan uses max
ketosis, which meant zero carbs of any kind for 6 weeks, then very small
amount of veggies and fruit till about 10-12 weeks. At that point small
amounts of other carbs can be added. However, I chose to stay in Max
ketosis for 4-1/2 months, with my surgeon's approval. I just had tot be
sure and get in enough fluids to wash the ketones out. I ate less than 10
grams of carbs a day total (including veggies and fruit) for that length of
time. I chose to do this because the max ketosis was burning the fat off
my body big time and I wanted to do everything I could to help it. After
that time I was going on vacation and knew it would be very hard to be that
low carb so I increased it to 5-10 grams per meal and now range from 0-15
per meal. My carb intake can vary drastically from day to day. Just
depends on what I feel like eating that day. I am almost 8 months out and
most day I am getting 70-100 grams of protein and 20-45 grams of carbs.
Fat varies also. Most times it is lower unless I eat string cheese for a
meal, which then will push it quite high. I do eat shrimp quite often when
is all protein and next to nothing for fat or carbs. So that's how I hit
100 grams some days.

I have had severe PCOS for 25+ years, but like I said I cannot say
it has had anything to do with my weight loss. I'm down 174 lbs in 7-3/4
months. I'm 68 lbs from a goal weight of 200. I also lost 200 lbs back in
94/95 which came off in 13 months. I ate 1200 calories and exercised till
I was dead. So in two instances I have lost significant weight and fast,
so I doubt it had any effect on me. But obviously it can vary with
everyone. I would not worry about it. Just focus on your surgeon's
post-op plan and get exercise going as soon as you can and keep working on
increasing it. In MY opinion, keeping the carbs as low as possible till
way PO is probably going to work best for someone with PCOS, but I have
nothing scientific behind that other than gut instinct. You will do great!!

Hi!!!
Although i have not reached goal as of yet, I believe that when someone is
suffering from pcos, they should have as little carbs as possible. for me
my beginning weight was 409 on 3/18/02 and today i weigh 205lbs. typically
i do not eat any bad carbs sunday- thursday and when i stick to this plan i
lose. i also limit my fruit intake because although it is natural sugar,
sugar turns to fat and you know what can happen. i have recently had a 5 lb
regain because of a bout with no sugar added ice cream. god bless
