Question:
What to do when clothes get baggy??
I have lost 25 lbs (which is alot for me). My pants are starting to get baggy. My plan was to wear them until they almost fall off (I dont want to spend money on pants that I might only wear for a few months). Anyway, people at work are starting to comment on my baggy clothes. Someone even said that I look silly. How did you deal with people's comments?? — S A. (posted on July 29, 2003)

Just ignore them!!!!
Often clothes could be easily altered by taking the seams in if you or a
friend sews. That would give you some more wearing time too and give your
clothes a more taylored look IF you want it. Many clothes can't be altered
easily tho like blue jeans. Congratulations on your weight loss.

I would tell them that if they were willing to give you money to buy close
then you would be more than willing to spend it!
FYI - I plan on doing my shopping at the local second hand store along
with eBay browsing.

I sold all my big clothes on eBay. Then bought smaller sizes from eBay. I
altered what I could, borrowed what I could, wore em big and I also hit the
discount shops such as Salvation Army when I got to an "easier"
size to accomodate. I think the "silly" comment- no matter how
"silly" this seems, is their way of commenting on your weight
loss, as in "way to go, you look silly cause your clothes are too big,
but I noticed your weight loss". How do you deal with it, you tell
them that was a "silly" comment.

I took my clothes to a consignment shop and used the money I made to
purchase clothes that would fit me there, sure did save alot of money. As I
keep losing I just continued doing that until I was in a size 8/10.

What did I do as my clothes got baggy??? For the first 180 pounds of loss,
I wore the baggy clothes with pride. Now, I go to WalMart and Costco every
4-6 weeks to get a couple of things in the next size smaller.
It is a dilemma well worth having! Good luck.

Hi Sondra- Do you want a truly "silly" response for such a silly
commentary from your co-workers? Just tell them you are preparing for your
upcoming Broadway roll as Evita, then jump on their desk singing your
rendition of "Don't Cry For Me, Argentina". LOL, not meaning to
be a wise guy, but the low level of intelligence of some people amazes me!
Seriously, what about asking them why they would chose to make such a
callous comment? Would these same people comment if someone were gaining
weight and buying bigger clothes? Congrats on your loss so far, you're
doing great!

Amazing!! People give us a hard time for being fat, then they still make
comments when our clothes get baggy! I can't believe someone told you you
look "silly" -- how rude! Just smile back and say "That's
because I'm losing weight so quickly, I can't even stay in a size long
enough to justify spending money on a smaller size!"

I had the same problem-- my co-workers started calling me "Saggy
Pants" (done in a joking way!) and I have to admit that after awhile,
I did look kinda silly in my "clown pants". As for addressing
rude comments, some people need to be muzzled before they leave the house.
I would just ignore it and revel in your success. Or, you could be really
evil and reply as I did to a particularly malevolent MO co-worker who
thinks WLS is the "easy way out": "Yeah, my clothes are
pretty loose, aren't they? But that's OK, at least I can donate them to
you." However, you don't have to spend a lot of money to get some
clothes that fit better. Do you have a Value Village in your area? They are
a thrift store department store chain, where you can get a pair of pants
(chinos, jeans, dressier pants) for $3-$8. I get most of my pant there now
and will continue to do so for the forseeable future. I did keep one pair
of my pre-op clothes and I get a really perverse thrill when I try them on.

At my job comments like that are meant to be a funny pat on the back (not
to insult). Frankly I get a kick out of them. When they ask if I lost
weight my response is "no, I didn't lose it, I put it away somewhere
and hope I don't find it again". I wear baggy pants with pride :-) I
bought smaller sizes, then when I fit, I weed out the baggy clothes. I
don't wear them until I look silly. At that point I would also look
unprofessional which would not be good come "review" time. I then
bring big clothes to a consignment shop and "trade" for smaller
clothes. I also donate them to a local domestic violence center who then
provides them to victims of domestic violence who need clothes to get jobs.

I have started shopping at Good Will. The jeans and pants are $3.99 and
shirts to. I don't feel the least bit guilty, because in a month I will be
donating them right back.

Sieze the moment. Go shopping!!!!! My motto is don't buy it if it costs
more than $20. I have gone from a size 24 to a 12 on the bottom, and clown
pants isn't the word. I was pretty lucky, as my sister, LC had her
surgery before me and gave me a whole pile of hand me down bottoms. For
tops, like I said, I bought cheap---Target, Kohl's etc.. I am starting to
shop for new stuff now, as my sister and I are coming to be pretty close in
size, and she isn't passing stuff to me as often. As a matter of fact, I
hit the 75% off rack at Macy's tonight and ot 2 sweaters for $4.99 each. I
have made looking for bargains my new hobby, or should I say---Addiction!!!
You can look decent without breaking your bank account!!!

I dont know if you go to a support group in your area but most groups have
a clothing exchange. That way when you lose you take your big clothes to
the exchange and go through the clothes brought by others that fit you now
and everyone is happy

Go to the thrift shop. I found one in the city that has name brand stuff
and I got 4 pairs of Ralph Lauren shorts this summer for 2.00 each. A cute
Laura Ashley shirt for 3.00, a Calvin Klein denim dress for 5.00. You get
the idea. They even have sales where their "regular" prices are
half off! No one has a clue where I got them, and I get lots of
compliments on my cute outfits :)

People are idiots and there's no stopping most of them. I had a real
problem about 3 weeks ago when 2 women in the lunch room thought they were
funny commenting on my baggy pants. I could have pointed out a few things
I didn't care for regarding their appearance instead I responded that I'm
down so many sizes I can't keep up...nor did I care what they think
anyway.
They haven't commented since which is the way I like it.
There is NO fixing someone's brain...or lack thereof.
Best wishes!

People are so CRUEL now that the world is getting PATHETIC. I will be in
the same situation myself... not having a lot of money to keep buying
clothes over and over again. I know you feel like telling people...
"if you don't like the way I am dressed I am available to go shopping
with you since you are buying me clothes". I tell you, I bite my
tongue at work EVERY DAY just to keep from losing my job. You know what I
do... I smile at folks and keep on going. It is the smile that throws them
off. Congratulations on your weight loss! God Bless you!

YARD SALE - YARD SALE - YARD SALE (with some thrift stores thrown in for
good measure!). I have been at goal for a couple of years but have become
addicted to the treasure hunt for inexpensive clothes. Please know that
I'm not saying this in a snooty way but...I usually wear only the best
brand names and even kinda lost control at one point just wanting to have
one month where I never wore the same thing twice. I think the desire to
do that was born out of having to pay so much for plus size clothing that
my wardrobe was very small. I don't have much money either. And I was
never really able to wear trendy fashionable clothing. Anyway, I check the
papers every week for yard sales in upscale neighborhoods and church yard
sales are even better. Thrift stores are good but a bit more expensive
than yard sales. At this very moment I'm wearing a $3.00 orange sweater
with a $2.00 tropical print skirt and $1.00 strappy sandals. It's a pretty
cute $6.00 ensemble. It's so funny at work now - people ask me all the
time "Well, how much did you pay for that outfit?" I limit
myself to $20.00 a weekend and I don't go every weekend - usually once or
twice a month. Sometimes baggy clothing looks sloppy but that still
doesn't give anyone the right to be unkind or mistreat you. I say
celebrate the new you and treat yourself to a few yard sales.....except I
don't call them yard sales anymore - I call them treasure hunts. You're
beautiful and don't ever let anyone make you feel otherwise. Best wishes
to you.

You should overlook stupid people. You know why your pants are baggy and
others don't have the right to make fun, but they do. Let them be A--H---s.
They are just envious of your weightloss snd wish they were you. I ignore
ignorant people. Go to a thrift store and buy you some decent clothes for
little of nothing. I have not had WLS yet. When I do I plan to wear my same
clothes until they fall off. I am gonna want people to notice my weightloss
and don't give a care who says whatever. I am self conscious, but I feel
you should do what is best for you. Don't pay any attention to those stupid
people. I know it is easy to say, but I have been made fun of all my life
for being fat and I am not gonna let a pair of baggy pants upset me. They
are just JEALOUS!!! God bless fools and D--- others.

It's amazing what people will say, isn't it?! Anyway, I found that a lot
of people who commented on my baggy clothes (I'm down 125 pounds and at
goal now), actually thought that they were complimenting me by noticing by
large weight loss! It's the same kind of back-handed compliment people
give when they say things like, "You look so much better NOW...."
GRRRRR Anyway, I tried to buy cheap, Wal-Mart type basic clothes as I
lost weight. For example, I'd get one pair of black pants that fit and put
a few different tops with them. It sure helped my moral to buy a few cheap
things that fit, in smaller sizes :-) as I lost weight. But, regardless,
just remember that these people are all secretly really jealous that you're
getting thinner and they are not!
