Question:
At 12 wks post op, drainage continues, how do I heal it?
The doctor burned off balls of flesh at the bottom of my incision 2 times now. It continues to drain. He said if it is still not healed in another 3wks he will burn it off again. He uses silver nitrait. How can I help it heal sooner, or do I just play the waiting game? Has anyone ever heard of using Comfrey herb on their incision? — wildchild (posted on July 22, 2003)

The drainage question made me think of a possible solution, but you spoke
of the Dr. burning balls of fat with silver nitrate so I am not sure
exacitly what you are talking about. But, when I had a hysterectomy and
tummy tuck 3 years ago I had drainage for about 12 weeks. Twice a week at
every appointment the Dr had to aspirate fluid that would collect at the
bottom of the incision line. A friend suggested it might be the immune
booster tablets I was taking large quantities of them since I had
unexpected family guests in my home and they all had the flu. I did some
research on an immune booster. It was the garlic and ginger in the
product. Both are blood thinners and slowed down the closing off of all
the little bleeders under the skin. I would suggest you check all the other
medications you might be taking especially if they are natural products and
not prescribed by your doctor.

I'm at 6 weeks post-op, and have the same situation. The little balls
being burned off by the silver nitrate are excess scar tissue, according to
my surgeon. He also told me to start packing my incision again, so that
the fluids will drain out of my body rather than building up inside. I
know how frustrated you are, because I'm fed up with this whole open
incision thing! I've not heard of using comfrey - I'd like more info on
that. Hang in there, and good luck!
