Question:
Are you able to swallow pills?? I'm confused as to
Why I was told to crush or chop up my pills. What about capsules, can we swallow capsules? Your stomach is made smaller but your esophagus isn't, what's your experience. — Kimberly J. (posted on July 10, 2003)

Hi, I took all my regular pills after surgery. I even had to get my pain
meds in pill form because the pharmacy didn't have liquid. I take a
capsule, a small pill and an iron pill. Two week after surgery I got
cellulitis and was put on a horse of an antibiotic pill that I had been on
before surgery and could swallow, but for some reason didn't think I could
after surgery so I broke it in half, but I have to say the jagged edges
made it harders to swallow the smaller pieces than if I had just swallowed
it whole. So far it seems that I am still getting the benefits of my
regular meds.

I was told any medications that would not desolve in a glass of water can
not be taken into the new pouch. No time released medications, and no
capsules.

my surgeon's rule about swallowing pills is this...a round pill the size of
or smaller than an m&m can be swallowed. a caplet or capsule can also
be swallowed as long as it is no thicker than the width of your pinky. i
have been swallowing meds since my surgery with no problems.

Kimberly, You're right, your esophagus isn't smaller, but the connection
between your stomach & intestines is. If the pill is too big for that
hole, it has to be able to disolve with little or no stomach acid, in your
pouch.

I swallow pills. Have since 30 days and probably could have before that,
but was a chicken. I split the pills then. All the pills I use either
dissolve in water OR saliva within a few minutes.
