Question:
How soon after open RNY can a person go back to water aerobics?

Hi...I was back in the pool for water aerobics on day #18 post op. Of course I wasn't up to my normal pace, and I took it easy with the hopping and bouncing, but now I'm back to my usual speed in the pool. I waited until my open incision was healed over. Good Luck!

Once your incision is completely healed you can go back in the pool. Then it's just a matter of what exercises don't hurt.

Kathy, I'm not so sure about the water aerobics, but 2 days after surgery I was in the pool, walking for exercise.... I would check with your doctor, as you really don't want to pull anything, Post op 12 months down 133 pounds

Hi~ I asked my surgeon this question. He said to wait 4 weeks until you get in a pool or a hot tub (I asked about the hot tub to). He did not think any sooner would be better because the longer you stay in the water the softer the skin gets and he thinks you would be at a greater risk for it to open a little and have signs of drainage.

My surgeon encourages his patients to start water aerobics as soon as the incision is completely healed. That varies from person to person, but I wouldn't think before 4 weeks out. AS always, with something this important, ASK YOUR SURGEON. All doctors are different, and it is important to follow your surgeon's instructions.

I had open RNY April 7th and was told not to take baths, get in hot tubs or pools (basicly submerse/soak my insicion) for 6 weeks. Of course my luck at the six week mark I got sick and haven't been able to get in the water yet.

I was in water aerobics 3 weeks after my open RNY. I asked the surgeon at my 2 week check-up and he said after the steri-strips fell off, which should be 1 week. It was, so I went! It was a great way to start working out, just stay away from any ab work. ;->
