Question:
I am almost 5 months out and only down 56 pounds. Anyone else that slow to loose?
Anyone have some awesome advice to jump start the weight loss? I was 236 when I had surgery but still?!? — Kristi T. (posted on February 23, 2003)

Hi Kristi. Sweetie, 56 pounds is awesome. So far so good. If you want to
up the weight loss you have to ask yourself some questions. What am I
eating? Am I exercising? Am I getting in enough calories? If you are
eating alot of carbs that may be slowing down your weight loss. Eat more
protein. That will definitely get your weight loss going. If you are not
going to the gym, start now. If you are not getting enough calories in you
won't lose because your body will think you won't feed it anymore and stop
letting you lose. I am 3 months out, watch what I eat and go to the gym 4
times a week. I have lost 73 pounds. Don't forget though; the heavier
you are the quicker you lose. Good Luck to you. If you need to talk
e-mail me.

I am almost exactly where you are. I am only down 50lbs and started at
236. I walk - and I mean walk - over an hour almost every single day,
watch the carbs, etc., etc., I think there are several factors that
influence weight loss. You and I are both 'lightweights" so I think
we lose a little slower. Also, I have been overweight since at least age 7
- 40 years a fat cells being in charge! I doubt they will go away without
a fight. Like others, I have been on multiple diets in my life, so I think
that makes it more difficult to lose. I also graph my weight everyday and
I am due for a drop of several pounds ( and i think it started today!) My
advice - be patient. I try to keep in mind what I will likely look like on
my one year surgical anniversary. Some of us are just destined to lose it
slowly! Congratulations on the 56 lbs. - that's great!

You have probably lost almost 60% of your excess in JUST 5 months. That is
the number you need to go by. Not the lbs. Someone who needs to lose 200
lbs. and loses 100 lbs. by their 6 month mark has only lost 50% of their
excess. But if you compare yourself with them by their pounds lost, your
setting yourself up for disappointment. We are all so very different and
lose at diff. rates. I lost somewhere in the neighborhood of the 60's by
my 5 month (its on my profile, should have checked first), but I also
weighed more than you (250) starting out. We are lightweights, so expect
to lose slower but also expect to make it to goal faster, that is the
upside to being a LW!! Also, you are at 180?? Wow! How many more to
goal? And your window is open for another YEAR!!

Hi Kristi:
I started out at 226-230 pounds. I was 226 pounds on the day of
consultation, and I think 230 pounds on the day of surgery. By month 5, I
had lost 62 pounds. In month 6, I lost 4 pounds. To date, 6 months later,
I have lost 66 pounds, averaging 11 pounds per month. That is exactly
where you are. I was so discouraged, the same as you. For the first 5
months I not only followed my diet religiously, I was also never hungry.
This has changed in the past few weeks. I am hungrier than before. Since
our losses are so similiar, I just have to tell you to keep on doing what
you are doing. Please do not be disappointed when you read about those who
lose much more quickly. Many of those people have much more to lose, and
of course, will lose quicker. Feel free to check my profile. I have my
monthly losses listed there. Good luck to you. You will make it.
Love Grace

I will be 5 months out tomorrow and started @ 5'4", 245lbs. My goal to
get to 145 but would really love 125. I am down exactly 70lbs to 175. I am
very happ with the loss, but want more!!!! I have notice over the past month
I can eat more and do find that I am getting hungry more often, I hate
it!!! The loss has slowed, I haven't lost a pond in three weeks. I know
everyone says that is normal, but it doesn't make it any easier and I still
think every pound I lose it the last...I hope not. Good luck :)

To know how to help, you'll need to tell us a bit more. What are you
