Question:
I see there is a new category asking members to show their fees, but I don't see a
place to access the information, only one to add your own. I would like to know what people are being charged for their surgery, how much their insurance pays and how much they have to pay out of pocket for non-network surgeons. Please share your information publicly. Thanks. — Arlene S. (posted on September 30, 2002)

Hi, even though I have not had surgery yet, I can tell you what my surgeon
quoted as the charge for this surgery. Keep in mind that i live in the
midwest and I am sure the charges are different everywhere. But the grand
total quoted to me is $22,000.00. This includes, the hospital stay, the
anestesia, and the surgeons bill ( that also includes 1 year of follow
appointments with my surgeon.)
Hope this gives you some idea of what you are wanting to know. As far as
how much the insurance pays, I don't know yet, but I have United HealthCare
Select. Good luck and best wishes to all pre ops, and new post ops! I am
SOOOOO looking forward to having this surgery done, and I am a very
impatient person, so it is hard to wait! So anyway... untill next time...

The total amount that would have been billed to my insurance was around
$27,000 (the hospital sent me a copy of it). My insurance flat out
excluded the surgery so I was self-pay and got a package "deal"
from St.Luke's and my surgeon for $18,000. That covered all pre-op
testing, surgeon's fees, the surgery itself, 3 days stay in the hospital,
and all the post-op visits my surgeon requires.

My surgery was billed at $48,000. My insurance paid around $24,000. The
discount was taken off and so that was about how much the surgery was with
the insurance discount. I have BC/BS State of SC. My doctor charged around
$9,000. I had lap rny with Dr. Glen Strickland in Lexington SC. I was in
the hospital for 5 days. (That is how long he keeps his patients.) I did
not have to go to icu and I had not complications. That was just basic
surgery. Hope this helps!

My surgeons charge was $7,000. My hospital bill was $48,000 which included
extensive pre-op testing and six days inpatient on a bariatric floor,
because I was from out of state, my surgeon wanted me to stay in the
hospital for six days. I was also seen daily by an internist and the total
bill for him was $750. So far my insurance has reimbursed everyone at 100%
after my $250.00 deduct.
