Question:
I was wondering has anyone took bile salts after their surgery?
In the packet that I got from my surgeons' office it said that some take bile salts so it would prevent gallstones from developing. Has anyone heard of this or taken them? Thanks so much for any info. — Donna O. (posted on July 3, 2002)

I believe "bile salts" is the generic term for Actigall (or Urso
here in Canada). Many bariatric surgeons recommend 300 mg twice a day for
the first 6 months post op to prevent gall stone formation. I began taking
Urso at 1 month post op, and have no problems with it whatsoever. Luckily,
it's covered by my insurance, otherwise it would cost me $120 CAN/month. If
you know of anyone who's had gallstones, you've probably heard how painful
they are... taking two pills a day to prevent them is a small price to pay
I guess!

I also take Actigall. I decided not to take right after surgery and begin
having gallbladder attacks within two months. I didn't have any gallstones
yet, so I started on Actigall -- and so far, so good. I'm 10 months
post-op now and I believe that I will be able to keep my gallbladder! My
insurance also covers to cost of the drug as it is very expensive -- in
Alabama it runs about $250.00 a month for the generic. I am able to get
three months supply for $10.00 through my insurance mail order plan -- what
a difference! I encourage you to take the medicine post-op as it is highly
effective in decreasing the formation of bile sludge and gallstones.

I am not, but I ask my doctor about it and he said it is very expensive and
really not necessary. Only 20% of patients have gallbladder problems after
WLS, that leaves an 80% chance that you will be ok. Sharon
