Question:
Can we eat fruit post-op?

Good morning peers. I am 16 months post-op from an RNY surgery. Recently I was told we are not suppose to eat fruit post op because of the "natural sugar" fruit has. I was never told not to eat fruit, but now I'm concerned. I would rather pick up a peach or some watermelon, or some strawberries to satisfy a sugar craving vs. picking up a piece of chocolate. Will eating fruit hinder my weight loss or make me gain weight? If so, is there any fruit we can eat?    — Vanessa J. (posted on June 10, 2002)

My surgeon promotes fruit, yes get your protein in first but fruit is contains many vitamins, fiber etc we need.

Yes, fruits have some carbs, but they are in the form of fructose, which is easier on our bodies than straight sucrose, or refined sugar. I, too, have never dumped on fruits and find they really help me deal with my sweet tooth.

Yes you can have fruit. Many people talk about avoiding carbs, but what they really mean are starches, potatoes, pasta, bread, etc. You do need to get protein first, but our bodies need protein, carbs and fat. The best way to get your carbs in is thrugh fruits and vegetables. As someone else said, you get important nutrients thrugh fruits and veggies and they also provide fiber. You also need to get some fat. Fat is essential for processing fat soluble vitamins and it also helps keep your skin and hair from being too dry.

I have been eating fruit everyday, since I am having a hard time eating solids (nearly 2 months postop). It is the sweet thing that I crave! I make sure that I have my protein in (or will, depending on the day) and I treat myself. I like watermellon the best, because it so wet and soft it goes down VERY well. I also eat grapes (peel them first), strawberries, and cantaloup.

I was told by my surgeon that fruit is fine, it is the simple sugars like the piece of chocolate you mentioned they want us to stay away from.

Nancy. Keep it clean???? I guess I don't have a dirty enough mind as I have no idea how eating fruit is "dirty"? Kind of wish I did now as you have me wondering. lol Anyway I just love fruit, so I'm happy I can eat it post op But I don't dump on fruit so I'm lucky. Hmmm. Keep it clean??? What else could this mean??? Dang I wish I did have a dirty enough mind to figure out what "you mean". Geese I'm slow sometimes. ;)
