Question:
How does one go about getting a sleep study?
I have an initial consultation with a surgeon on May 22. How does one go about getting a sleep study done? I have had VERY poor sleep for the past 4-5 years. Would the surgeon set me up or do I need to do it myself? — Katy J. (posted on May 14, 2002)

Hi. To get my sleep study done, I needed a referral from my
PCP. Many hospitals have a sleep center and you just call
and make an appointment. Call your hospital and see if it
can be done there. Good Luck.

I would think your surgeon would order this test for you. Just make sure
you tell him/her of your sleep problems. My surgeon ordered my study from
a place in San Diego called Sleep Data, Inc. The cost was $750.00. They
federal expressed the machine to me the next day. I did the test and then
returned it to them with the pre-paid label they gave me.

I have had several sleep studies done and they have always been initiated
by my PCP. If you are not getting quality sleep he will order a study.
Good luck- you will not believe how good you are going to feel when you get
that first good night's sleep.

It depends on your insurance. If you have an HMO, you will need to see
your PCP. If you have a PPO, you may be able to go directly to a sleep
center or a pulmonologist. Your surgeon will be able to recomend someone
if you are unsure where to go.
