Question:
This is a wild question/Asking out of curiousity actually....
But is there anyone who has had surgery and then had to go to jail/prison, I was wondering what you would do about your new eating habits, do they accommodate you in there or what? I know this sounds a bit odd, but I am just wondering if this situation has ever occurred....... — blank first name B. (posted on March 11, 2002)

while I have been fortunate and never been in jail, I would'nt think they
would cater to a persons needs that way..maybe medicine needed, but I doubt
they will give "special" foods..a person would have to make due
with what was given. Afterall they would be in jail because they broke a
law-committed a crime...not to be catered to...It would be a shame for that
to happen to a person and them not get what they needed.

Just recently there was a BIG article in our paper about jail food. YES
they do have to accomodate MEDICAL FOOD NEEDS. So diabetics and WLS
patients would get special consideration. Our local lockup spends just
under $2 a day feeding the immates a high carb diet cause its cheap. That
wouldnt do for a WLS patient. Jails ALSO have to accomodste religious needs
like no pork for the jewish. I hope no one has done something bad to get
locked up. It would be sad to finally get your life back then see it pass
sitting behind bars.

This question made me giggle ~ who knows, huh? I guess one of the
crummiest things in the entire world would be to get fit, in health,
feeling all good about yourself and end up in prison where you get to
interact with all woman or all men all day long. Nope, not for me - I'll
just stay on the straight & narrow. Hope this never happens to anyone
else either.... : ) .. I love the things this website people can think
of.

Bob is right in what he shared here. I'm a volunteer with the prison system
(Christian ministry)and know that if a special diet was medically necessary
most places would proivide it. The problem is does the facility considered
it that way. I just wanted to make one comment to the person who feels this
would be "catering" to an inmate. In the United States the
punishment for crime is jail/prison. It is not for them to punished again
while in prison. I can assure you after speading time ministring to men and
women in prison that no one is being "catered" too. A medically
necessary diet would be a civil thing to provide.

Interesting question (and why am I going through the archives several years
late? Why not?). Anyway, regarding jail food and accomodations, recently
there was a case locally (a notorious bomber, now elderly and diabetic)
where the inmate claimed that the prison was not providing for his diabetic
diet and not allowing him to have his insulin or other diabetes medicines.
The prison is denying it of course, but knowing too many people in
corrections makes me believe this old bomber's claims--they are trying to
kill him by withholding or delaying his needed medications. It ain't all
that rare in the prison system. Yes, he is a murderer. Does that give the
prison the right to withhold needed medications? So, yeah, legally they
must be accomodating, but in reality, I think you could just forget it.
Just try to get by eating what you can and avoiding what you should not
eat. Just my 2 cents worth.
