Question:
Did anyone have trouble wearing a Bra post-op?
I'm 3 weeks post-op and I'm a 44DD and it hurts to wear a Bra it hits right at the top of my scar just wondering if anyone else has had this and what did you do! — Jennifer J. (posted on February 15, 2002)

Hi. I had the same problem after my open RNY, only my incision had split
open right at the top. I folded over a 4x4 of gauze and taped it across
the top of the scar. After the incision closed, the top of the scar was
still hurting and my bra rubbed right across it, causing small sores where
it rubbed. I wore a band-aid across the top until I was 2 months post op
and that was enough to keep it from rubbing. I'm 3 months out now and it
no longer hurts to have my bra rub across the incision. Good luck!

I wore a 48DD before surgery--am down to a 40D now after 3 months. I, too,
had probs with my bra hitting the top of my incision. I took a soft
handkerchief and put it under the band of my bra and it cushioned the
stress on the incision. Hope this helps you.

Jennifer, Nothing worked for me til I cut a notch out of bottom of the band
(over the top of my incision). Wish I had done it earlier cause the rubbing
made for slow healing.

YES!!!!!!!!!!! I am three months post op and I still have troubles. My
incision went up between my breasts so that made it worse. I still only
can wear a sports bra (40DD) and it comes off ASAP when I get home. I hope
that this pain goes away because they need to be restrained in a bra! Good
luck! Amy

I think a sports bra is worth trying. Also, if you are immediately
post-op, you can tuck the bulb from the drain tube into it to keep it from
getting in the way.

Hi, I am almost six weeks out and have just recently began to wear a bra
again. I am one of the unfortunate few who can wear a 42A--not that you
could ever find one in this size. I hate bras!!! Either they are too small
around the band or too big in the cups. If boobs are the first thing to go
I may just have to resort to the preteen section :( Everyone else in my
family is a respectable C or D, I swear I am adopted :) Good luck. Liz

I had the same problems with a bra. I had read to cut and upside down V
into it because I would grow out of it anyway. When I was around the house
I went without. Even when I went walking, or taking the kids to school, I
went without. It was cold outside, and I would simply be covered up with a
coat so nobody even noticed. I found the sport bra to be too constricted
like it was a boa constricter around me, could not handle that, maybe
because I was sore, and probably a little swollen. But you can give that a
try. My doc suggested putting some padding there, like a maxi, under the
bra line to cushion. These are about the best ideas until you can get
through the beginning stages. Enjoy your journey!!

Hi, I was a 46dd when I had my surgery, and I bought 2 48dd sports bra's
that hooked in the front only and this helped 100%, This way it was a
little loose and I could unsnap the bottom 2 hooks so it didnt rub against
my cut or the bone.
good luck

hi i had a big problem withn this i was 46j prior to sutgery.i finally
sorted out the problem of the bra and sore scar by buying a wired bra which
curved upwards in the centre it just missed catching the scar,i got mine
from a shop that sells bras for big boobed women i live in the uk the shop
specialises in measuring you and making sure the bra fits.there must be a
shop like that near to you.at first i would put a soft cloth under my old
bra before discovering the shop.be careful my old bra caught my scar and
tore it open it took weeks to mend
