I followed the Atkins Diet for years and, if I remember correctly, even
during the induction phase of that diet, they recommend approx. 20 carbs
per day. Your body requires a certain amount of carbs each day to maintain
healthy brain function, among other things. Ideally, those carbs should
come from things like green leafy vegetables, beans, etc. Cheese and meat
(which are great sources of protein) also have minimal amounts of carbs in
them. Personally, I'm paying more attention to my protein right now and
the carbs are falling into line with it. I'm not eating bread or snack
food or any of the other things that are notoriously high carb foods. I am
eating cheese, tuna and chicken because they are high protein and minimal
carbs. Good luck!

I was told by my nutritionist to only get about 12-15 carbs a day because
after this it becomes sugar. I have found that if I exceed this, I start
to feel very ill. I have a very LOW tolerence to any sugar form. As for
the protein, I was told 60 grams per day, but another doctor has said that
30 grams a day is sufficient for our bodies. Hope that this helps.

Note that for some diabetics a very low carb diet can be dangerous. It can
cause kidney abnormalties. Everything in moderation. 20 carbs a day is a
low number.
