Question:
Should I plan on using depends for a week or two post op?

I understand that diahhrea shows up very quickly after eating. Should I plan on using Depends (or some such product) for a while post op, or will I have enough warning to get to the bathroom?    — Ted L. (posted on September 10, 2001)

I am 4 months out and experience sudden onset diareha, so bad, I've have bowel movements on my way to the bathroom, in the car & on the couch. I've learned that it mostly happens when I eat something really greesy. I've often wanted to wear depends, this has happened to me several times...Sorry, no real anwser.

I have the big "D" mostly in the morning. I go about 3 times, but it isn't anything I can't hold. I had my gallbladder out at the same time and the doctor told me to expect it. But it really hasn't been that bad. I would keep them handy and see how your body is going to react.

I think if you are having a problem with sudden diarrhea it makes good sense to wear "protection" until you figure out what triggers it and get it under control. You don't need to be embarassed or soil things unnecessarily. It has nothing to do with "being two". Good grief, your whole system has been just been changed in a major way. It will take time for it to normalize again. This happens to patients who have other GI surgeries too not just WLS. Good luck! Hope- fully you won't have any problems. Kathy
