Question:
What alternatives are there to morphine and demerol?
The last time I had surgery, I coded on morphine. Demerol didn't really help much either. My surgeon doesn't use epidurals. What are my alternatives? — [Anonymous] (posted on August 9, 2001)

I don't know much about pain meds. But my doctor prescribed oxycontin for
my severe pain. I haven't taken it yet because he did say it is highly
addictive and I'm waiting on a pain doctor to do an epidural for me now.
You may want to try oxycontin

There are several pain medications, however the most important thing is to
make sure that you do not repeat morphine or any of its relatives. Demerol
is a very short acting drug and rarely provides good relief for very long
and cannot be given frequently enough as it lowers seizure threshhold.
There are lots of good narcotics and non-narcotics other than morphine,
such as percocet, vicodan, duragesic, dilauded, etc... but make sure that
someone is monitoring you closely since you had the previous problem and
make sure to stay away from morphine, ask your doc for advice.

I chose not totake anything narcotic. I have found that Toradol( it is a
non-narcotis imposter of Demerol) works very well for me and doesn't make
ma feel "high". Thank You, but I like being in control of my
faculties. LOL.
