Question:
How long is the hospital stay after hernia repair?
My husband is having two hernia's repaired on November 16, 2000. One is just above his belly button and quite large the second in at the top of the scar where he had heart by-pass surgery September 1999. I am scheduled for Lap RnY on December 7, 2000. How long will my husband be in the hospital? Will he be able to handle my needs three weeks after his own surgery? His Dr. told him he would be off work for 2 weeks but he forgot to ask how long the hospital stay would be. Thanks. — Marty R. (posted on November 6, 2000)

Some hernias are repaired on an out-patient basis. Mine was repaired on a
23-hour-admit, but I ended up staying three nights in the hospital instead.
So, it is really hard to guess, even for the surgeon himself. But, the
recovery from my hernia repair went a lot quicker than from my RnY. It is
a much-less invasive surgery. Your husband should be able to take care of
you just fine, although he may be restricted on how much weight he can
lift.
