Question:
Sources of dietary products.
I need sources of liquid proteins, easily absorbed minerals and vitamins. My bones are deteroirating; I have developed severe food allergies; I have chronic fatigue syndrome; and I need food sources. THANKS! — Anna H. (posted on May 13, 2000)

Hi Anna.... I am so sorry for about your serious condition.. You had Open
RNY, right? I'm curious about what kind of things your doctor has
suggested. Are you exercising? Weight resistance is a great source for
building up & strengthening bones. How are you getting your calcium?
Dairy? Supplements? I would suggest to lift weights in addition to what
your doctor's orders are... ((hugs)) to you....

Anna - check out Karemore's site for spray vitamins and nutritionals. I
know that they've done presentations at ASBS & my doc does recommend
them (I'm having problems swalling some vitamins & find prenatals very
constipating). My Doc said they've had success/good results with patients
using the spray instead. I'm told there is no taste. www.karemor.com

For your bones, I'm sure you're on calcium supplements. I read just
yesterday that Calcium Carbonate (the kind in TUMS and Viactiv) is only
about 40-60% useable calcium, and that Calcium Citrate gives near total
absorption. Vitamin D will help, too. Try ADEKs or Allergy A&D, both of
which have no fish oil. You need to avoid softgels and the like, because
the vites are in an oil suspension, which is harder to absorb. GNC and The
Vitamin Shoppe both carry some liquid proteins, but in my opinion, they
pretty much suck. I stick with protein powders, and use them in fruit
smoothies and shakes. If you can take them, they're easier to get down, and
can be really tasty, done right. I hope your supplement problems right
themselves soon. Best of luck!

Anna,
I have been using Ultra Pure Protein from GNC as a protein
suppliment. It has 180 calories, 35 grams of protein, 4-6 grams
of carbs, 1.5 grams of fat, no sugar (has a substitute), and
provides (based on a 2000 cal diet) 100% of daily calcium,
70% vitamin B12, 6% potassium, and others. It comes in
4 flavors (Ice cream vanilla, chocolate, cappiccino, and
strawberry), costs about $2.69 for a 12 oz. serving, and is found
in the cooler at GNC. Good Luck!
