Question:
I was recently told I have low platelet count...
but after many blood tests was found that my platelets are completely normal except they are now "clumping" when drawn in a normal lab tube. The hematologist found if he tested them in a special tube (sodium citrate tube) that the results were normal. No one seems to be able to tell me why this has happened. Has anyone else had this problem. I assume I will have to have my platelets checked with this special tube for the rest of my life otherwise they show up as extremely low. Anyone heard of this? I am exactly one year postop from WLS and never had any trouble with my platelets preop. — Jeannie4 (posted on July 18, 2004)

I don't know if this is related to WLS or not. I would ask my doctor about
it. It seems to me if they had special tubes for this type of problem, it
must not be too rare. I would be interested in what your doctor has to
say, as I have a special interest in platelets--I donate them every 2 weeks
year around. You can email me at [email protected]
Good luck
