Question:
Can you make
Im asking cause I drink the GNC 100% whey protein shake, the chocolate flavored one, and was wondering if I can heat milk or water and then add the protein to it. I usually drink it with water. A friend suggested to heat it like warm cocoa but am not sure if you can do it. Thanks for any info. — aida (posted on December 8, 2003)

Heat can ruin the integrity of protein, but I'm not sure how hot it has to
get. My guess is that you would need to leave the temperature somewhat
under boiling, but I don't know how much.

I use the same kind and had wondered the same thing. I called the 800
number for GNC and they told me that to heat this would compromise the
integrity of the proten. I didn't ask them about heating the liquid and
then adding the powder - maybe I'll call them back! Oh BTW - to make this
taste even better, there is a product out that has been mentioned here, it
is Carb Countdown by Hood. It's 'Atkins approved' and only has 3 grams of
carbs. They have chocolate, and all the white milks (whole, 2%, 1%,
non-fat) I do this and it tastes so much better than doing it with
water, plus, I get some calcium in also! I've only been able to find it at
Wal-Mart super centers though.

hiya~ you can heat whey protein to a boiling temperature then it begins to
"unravel" and it becomes denatured so you don't get the full
benefit. i start each day with a decaf coffee drink but i let the coffee
cool awhile before using it otherwise my protein does get all chunky and
weird! so i just put 1/3 cup of supplement direct brand unflavored whey
protein in a cup, pour my coffee over it (about 4-6 ounces) stir really
well, add soy milk and sugar free vanilla or sugar free hazelnut syrup and
it's like a latte.
you can do that with the designer whey brands also.
good luck!

I preheat my water in the microwave all the time. All I can say is to be
careful not to get it too hot....you might have to play around a bit to
find just the right amount of time for your protien. If the water is too
hot, the protien will 'curdle' and it is really nasty.

My Unjury unflavored protein powder states on the container to not use it
in liquids that are over 130 degrees. It states that the texture can be
affected in hotter liquids. I don't think that the protein becomes
"no good" or anything, though, because you can also use protein
powder in baking and cooking, so it's going to get hot then. If you are
looking for a hot chocolate-type drink, I drink two every day and love it.
I mix one packet of diet or no-sugar-added hot cocoa with about 10 oz.
water. I then stir in one scoop of my protein powder. It is a wonderful
drink that gives me 22 grams of protein and satisfies my chocolate
cravings. Good luck and enjoy! ~Kristy (lap rny 9/18/03 - 320/271/168)
