Question:
Question about liquid calcium!
I started taking a liquid calcium called LIQUID CAL-MAG+ made by KAL. I know we are supposed to take citrate, but the ingredients list Calcium Phosphate, calcium citrate, calcium gluconate and calcium lactate, along with vit D and Mag. Does anyone know anything about these other forms of calcium. Are they easily absorbed???? Any help??? — Jeannie4 (posted on September 24, 2003)

Hi Jeannie- In my own search for answers to the calcium question this is
what I found: Calcium phosphate provides 23-39% calcium. The extra
phosphorous contained in this form is unnecessary since most people get
plenty of phosphorous in their diets. Calcium gluconate provides only 9%
of elemental calcium, so it is generally a poor choice. Calcium lactate
comes from dairy products and provides 37% elemental calcium. The only
hard data I have found regarding absorption of calcium pertained to calcium
citrate. This particular study showed that patients with insufficient
stomach acid (older people, those who have had stomach surgery, and those
taking medications that block gastric acid production like Tagamet, Pepcid,
Prevacid, etc) can absorb about 45% of the calcium citrate compared to 4%
of the calcium carbonate.
