Question:
What can I expect at my psych eval?

I am doing the last of of my required preparations for my surgery before my doc can schedule it. A psychiatric evaluation is one of them. What can I expect them to ask me and want to know about me?    — Shavonne P. (posted on June 13, 2002)

my psych exam went great, i kept up a positive attitude, and used my wit to get thru. he asked me how long i've been overweight, and then we tried to pinpoint the numbers, which was a little tough trying to figure out my weight from high school and up... then about using alcohol, drugs, any surgeries, mom and dad, restof the fam health... what do you consider the bennies of weight loss, very nice interview, my psych doc michael medick is also a memory doc, so he kept trying to reask the same question to see if i had the same answer, as a joke i would say, well, doc if you were listening, i answered that, please refer to you notes on page two, or whatever, so that was that. friday i have a consultation with the surgeon and i have questions for him... don't dispare, its like a job interview. he also asked how i'd be able to handle the menu of foods post op, that sort of stuff too, good luck email me anytime, i'm starting my new lifestyle 2 jul, wish me luck sometime, hugs and hopes, deb

Many psych docs require you to take the MMPI exam. It's 567 questions, and man, are some of them whacked! Like, I sometimes hurt myself and don't know why, I hear voices that tell me what to do, etc. It takes 3+ wks to get the results of that test, so if they require it, it might be a painful wait. I didn't know that up front, so I just wanted to warn you in case. Good luck!

Hi - At my pysch. the doc. said he would ask some questions and if everything seemed ok, that would be it. If he thought I needed more then I would have to take the long written test. So he ask me about 30 questions, on my family health and backround, on if I had a family support system and what my wife and kids thought about the surgery, and my expectations from the surgery. While I was answering these questions he was continuously writing after a half hour of this, the doc said everything was fine and six weeks later I had my surgery (5/14/02). Good Luck !!!

I'm not sure who your insurance carrier is but mine is Kaiser and I had to lose prior to approval. and I did it!!!! and as far as psych eval you pretty much have to be able to handle the changes with no personal problems. bascally I suggest and maybe not for all ins. sort out all your "problems" first before you take that exam. because they won't approve you if your not mentally stable. like depression, eating disorters, suicidal tendacies. Thats with Kaiser though, maybe not with yours.
