Question:
Anyone else post-op hate meat
I am 11 weeks post-op and I totally hate the taste, smell, and texture of meat. Pre-op I was a meat eater (big time). Now I cannot stand it at all. I do not have a problem with it staying down. It settles fine. I just absolutely do not like anything about it now. NO KIND!! Has anyone else had this problem??? Will it pass or am I going to be a vegetarian. I used to hate vegetables, and now I love them..50 lbs gone and I am happy I had this done!! — terrifogle40 (posted on May 13, 2002)

Hi Terri: ME TOO!!! Pre-op I would have left everything else on my plate
and ate just meat...any kind at all...now just the smell absolutely gags
me. I have a real problem when we go to dinner and someone at the table
orders "rare" meat...OMG...worse than morning sickness...I too am
a veggie person now or the beans and cheese kind of girl...I am now 9 mos
post op and down #131....my bloods are way more than perfect so I figure
that this non meat eating girl is doing something right....You're not
alone..I have heard ALOT of people that can't stand the smell or taste.

I found that all my tastes changed radically after my RNY....all the things
that I loved before, I now couldn't stand, and all the things that I didn't
care for at all pre-op, I suddenly couldn't get enough of. I was always a
"double quarter pounder with cheese" kind of girl. After
surgery, I wasn't interested in any kind of meat...especially beef...and I
didn't have a hamburger again until I was approximately 18 months post-op.
Now, at 26 months post-op, I can honestly say that I enjoy the tastes of
all meats again, but it has taken a long time. I would suggest that you
not worry too much about this. Most people find that they have a return of
some degree of appetite and tastes after the first year or two after
surgery. Be sure to take your vitamin/mineral supplements and get the
amount of protein in that your surgeon/nutritionist recommends....you'll be
fine :-)

I don't care for beef, I much prefer chicken or fish :) I also used to be
a big beef eater, in any way, shape, or form, lol, I have had a hard time
with beef from the start though.

Funny how WLS affects us all so differently - I can't deal with chicken
anymore, but red meat goes down fine. (Although cheese and protein bars
are actually my preference!) Good luck!
