Question:
What is the average hospital stay?
I am having an OPEN RNY on May 13 and my doctor told me the average stay is at least 4 - 5 days. I have been reading some of the questions and answers and saw that alot of people went home on the 2nd or 3rd day. Is it just because there is such a difference in the Open and the Lap? — Sharon H. My doctor has it set at 3 days in. On the 3rd day he does a venous doppler
to check for blood clots and then discharges you. Unfortuneatly, I was in
for 6 days (Thursday til Tuesday) because they couldn't stabilize my blood
pressure...primarily because they found a blood clot in my wife's leg...we
both had RNY surgery on the same day. She ended up in the hospital for 9
days (Thursday til following Friday) until they stabilized her coumaden
levels and then sent her home. All is well now, my wife takes coumaden
daily until the next test and my blood pressure meds. were doubled (for
now) Good Luck to ya.

I had open RNY and was hospitalized for 5 days. The first 3 are a blur
because I was hitting the morphine pump, but the last 2 were mostly
walking, reading, and resting. I feel I needed every one of those 5 days.

I had an open RNY. My doctor normally has his patients stay in the
hospital for four days. I had my surgery on a Thursday and asked to go
home on Saturday. He said it was alright. I was so uncomfortable in that
bed and all I could think of was going home and sleeping in my recliner.

I had an open rny with a lovely foot long incision on August 15th. The
surgery was at 7:30 on a Wednesday morning and I was home by that Friday
night. My doctor said if I wanted to spend more time and money in the
hospital I could, but I could just as easily recuperate at home. I couldn't
wait to go home and would have preferred to leave Friday morning, but they
wouldn't give me anything to eat to prove I was okay until dinner time. As
soon as they did, I was out of there. I'm not a big fan of hospitals.

I'm having surgery this Tuesday, and it was explained to me that I will the
leave the hospital on the third postoperative day. When I was first
checking into RNY, my surgeon told us that the average stay for an Open RNY
is 4-5 days. But, since doing my pre-op tests, I have learned that as long
as everything is okay and I've passed all my "tests" in the
hospital, they will have me leave this Friday.

My doc's length of stay is 2 days. I was ready to go home then too. Some
are as long as 10 days. (although, I don't know why really)

I am having lapRNY on May 17. My doctor usually releases 48 hours after
surgery but has told me she wants to keep me an extra day due to my heart
problems.

I was a healthy 26 year old when I had my Open RNY, done with a
mini-incision (a little over three inches). My surgery was late Thuusday
afternoonand I was released from the hospital the following Monday, the
fourth post-operative day . This is my doc's standard protocol, and I was
glad for it.

I had open-RNY at 6:00p.m. on a Tues and went home that Thurs. at 1:00pm!I
was doing so well he said I could go home. This is less than 2 days! But, if
I had young children at home I might have asked to stay for 3 or 4 days if
the doc said so! Good Luck!

I had Lap RNY on 4/22. I had six incisions and 3 became infected and I
have a 20 month old at home so I ended up staying 4 instead of 3 days. I
heal quickly but honestly, I didn't want to leave the hospital on day 4. I
was tired, a bit sore and really just wanted to be left alone! Good Luck!
